I embarked on the task of discovering my ancestors at the age of 13, following nights of listening to my great-great Aunt Alice tell stories of how her family moved from East Tennessee to Oklahoma in a covered wagon in the 1870's, which left an indelible mark upon my developing psyche. From that point forward I became enamoured with the evolution and dynamics of genealogy and the possibilty of being able to determine, via the records, the "nth degree of separation" we all have from each other. I have concentrated on Americans who are descended from the earliest immigrants from the British Isles (England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales), Holland, and to a lesser extent, Switzerland and Germany. My primary interests are Colonial Virginia forward through the establishment of West Virginia, then following its formation, the counties of central and western West Virginia. Some of the surnames I am working on are Armstrong, Bean, Casto, Dennison, Douglas, Gregory, Hinzman, Hyre (Hyer), Irwin (same as Erwin and Irvin), Norman, Poe, Prince, Randolph, Rodgers, and Suderth, to name a few. I also have a deep interest in the early Dutch of New York (1640+). The CRONKHITE family is the driving force of this ambition. And then there is East Tennessee, where we have Hacker, Perry, Campbell, Whaling, and Hollingsworth, among others... . If you have an interest in determining how we might be related (just out of curiosity), drop me a line and we can try to find out how many degrees of separation it may take to find a link.
