This distinguished old English family can be traced for many generations in England. The ancestral seat was in Devonshire, England. They were originally of Norman ancestry and came to England after the Norman Conquest. The name being LeBret at that time until it was Anglicized into Britt. The arms are very simple in design because of its antiquity, it bears neither motto nor crest, as these did not come into use generally until the seventeenth century. The escallop or shell indicated a crusader to the Holy Land, and valiant fighting in the Holy War. The shells found along the coast near Palestine were used for drinking cups and food containers. A "fesse" (band across the middle of the shield) represented the military belt or girdle and was given for rand and honor.
