Welcome to my "Home Page".
My earliest know DOWNS ancestor was Thomas Downes Sr. b. 2 Feb 1611/1612 England, d. 21 Jan 1698/1699 Dover, Strafford Co., NH. Thomas was a shoemaker by trade, a housewright, & a Constable in 1666.
Thomas Downes Sr. came from England to Boston, MA in 1650 on the ship Defiance. Thomas was in Boston in 1652 where he witnessed the will of George Burden. The town of Dover, N.H. granted him land in Conchecho in 1656. He was taxed there in 1657. In 1675, he bought ten acres of the town and he was one of the petitioners to remain a part of Massachusetts in 1677. In 1670, Thomas sold Jediah Andrews of Salisbury "My late dwelling house and lot" on east side of the neck, bounded by Fore River, south by Mr. Raynor's land, north and west by The Common. In 1687, he sold Thomas Hanson fifty acres granted him by the town in 1656 at Conchecho near Mr. Rayner's. Thomas was constable in 1666. He was a shoemaker by trade. In the records in Boston, Massachusetts, Thomas Downs last name was spelled without the "e". In Dover, New Hampshire, the early records have the "e" added, then dropped on many of the papers.
Thomas Downs owned 60 acres in Great Falls, NH (now called Somersworth, NH). It was at Indigo Hill. There was a saw mill and grist mill just below the falls in Somersworth. In 1750, Samuel Downs owned this land. In 1900, a Mr. Morrill owned a part of it.
Rev. Pike says in his diary that Thomas DOWNES died after one months illness. In his Downs Genealogy Report, John A. Downs tried to spell the last name as it was found on records, papers, wills, etc.
William Ephraim Daniel DOWNES wrote an article titled 'Thomas Downes of Dover, N.H., and His Decendants' that is used for most of the reference material for my DOWNS genealogy. The article appeared in 1909 in the New England Register, Volume 90, pages 192 & 193. William graduated from Harvard University with high honors in 1891. In 1899, he received his Doctor of Philosophy at Boston University. I am researching the following families:
