15. FREDIE JOE⁴ DOWNS (FREDERICK EARL³, PHILENA² WATERS, CHARLES ’26 ’38¹) was born January 30, 1940 in Burkburnett, Wichita Co., Texas. He married BEVERLY LOU EDMONDS November 09, 1960 in Wichita Falls, Wichita Co., Texas, daughter of RUFUS EDMONDS and LOU BURGE.

Notes for FREDIE JOE DOWNS:
Fredie worked at several odd jobs after graduating from high school, including a short stint learning basic carpentry skills while working for a home builder in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
He also worked in the oil fields for his father as a roughneck and derrick man.
In 1962, he went to work as an apprentice pressman in the pressroom of the Wichita Falls Times And Record News. In 1965, during a labor dispute, the pressmen were 'locked out' and Fred went to Dallas, Texas to work for the Dallas Morning News in order to finish his apprenticeship.
In 1974, during another labor dispute, he was again 'locked out' and went to Minneapolis, Minnesota to work for the Minneapolis-Star Tribune. After a year and a very cold winter, he went to Houston, Texas to work for the Houston Chronicle. He worked there until 1995, when osteo-arthritis in both knees forced him to take disability retirement.

Notes for BEVERLY LOU EDMONDS:
Beverly worked in sterile supply at the Wichita Falls General Hospital until she and Fredie moved to Irving, Texas in 1965.
After they moved to Pearland, Texas, she worked at K-Mart for a short time during the 1980's.
Although she dropped out of school after marriage, she received her G.E.D from Alvin Community College in Alvin, Texas and now works, on a part time basis, as a teachers aide in the Pearland ISD.
In September 1997, after sending some Edmonds family genealogy material to her Aunt Santa, Beverly called to tell her about building a new home and received the following letter from Santa:

Dear Beverly,

Congratulations to you and Freddie on loan. I am enjoying reading about our history. Papa was eight when they moved to Itasca, Texas.
This will never, but never, go down in any write up about the Edmonds. But here 'tis. When Papa was very young, he told Grandma "Every body has a long name but me and from now on I am Leon Curtis Housetop Poot Butt Edmonds."
He never denied saying it.
