Dr. Ruth Okey, Woodsfield girl, Professor Emeritus, honored in California for 50 years of Lipid Research at the University of California, Berkley.
Graduated from Woodsfield High in 1911. She began her college career in at Ohio University in Athens and graduated three years later from Monmouth college with a double major in Chemistry and German. The following five years, at the University of Illinois, resulted in a M.S., a PhD., and a year of teaching and post doctoral research on the chemistry of plant pharmaceuticals. In 1919 she joined the faculty at Berkley as Assistant Professor of Household Science. In 1921 she taught at the State University of Iowa, then returned in 1922 to Berkley to resume a career of teaching, researching and public service. In 1962 she received the Borden Award for "research in the field of nutrition and experimental foods". In 1956 she became Chairman of her department and held this post until her retirement in 1960. In 1960 she received the title of Professor Emeritus.

Miss Mary Okey recently returned from Aligah, India, where she spent the past five years as an instructor in the Missionary schools, having had five years college training preparatory to carrying on this work. Miss Okey visited Palestine including Jerusalem and many other points famous in Biblical History on her way home. She will spend the winter in home missionary work in the south. Well-educated, with great natural ability, charm of personality and a heart-interest in her work, Miss Okey has been an active factor in her field.
