3. JOHN COUCH³ DOWNING (JOHN EDWIN², JOHN EDGAR¹) was born 1857 in Portsmouth, N.H., and died 1921 in Seattle, WA. He married ALLIE VESTA UNDERWOOD, daughter of JOHN UNDERWOOD and ROSANNA BOYLES. She was born August 05, 1865 in San Luis Obispo County, Ca, and died March 14, 1951 in Tampa, Fla.

Notes for JOHN COUCH DOWNING:
There were many ranchers and preachers in the Downing line, but John Couch Downing went to sea at the age of 14. He eventually sailed as a sea captain (Merchant Marine) out of Seattle. During the gold rush he sailed a route from Seattle to Nome, Alaska, to the Phillipines and back to Seattle. Hauling supplies to Nome, his cargo was sold at great profit for gold and ivory, he then purchased carved goods in the Phillipines to be sold in Seattle.
Allie Vera Underwood thought that John had Uncles in Portsmouth, but the family had died out.

Notes for GLADYS MARIE DOWNING:
Gladys was an actress of note on the West Coast theater circuit. She lost a leg in an elevator accident, and successfully sued the Otis Elevator Company. Her acting carrer was cut short and she retired to the California coast (S.F.?). .
