The paternal ancestors of my family were mostly English Puritans who came to America during the migrations of the 1630s and 1640s. Many of these eventually settled in Fairfield County, Connecticut. These include the following surnames: BEERS, BULKELEY, CHAUNCEY, DARLING, DOWNS, GRIFFIN, HULL, JOHNSON, NORTHROP, OLMSTEAD, PRUDDEN, PULLING, SCOTT, SHEPARD, TAYLOR, WAKEMAN, and WHITNEY. The maternal ancestors of my family were from Scotland and Ireland. Many of these settled in the counties along the Monongahela River in southwestern Pennsylvania. These include the following surnames: BAKER, FIFE, MILLER, PENNY, and ROBINSON. My grandfather GEORGE WELWOOD MURRAY, who came to the United States in 1884, was a descendant of the LAWSON, MURRAY, AND NICHOLSON families from the coast of Fifeshire via Edinburgh. My wife's paternal ancestors included the following surnames: ANGLEY, CRAIG, EPLY, HENSLEY, HUNTER, MAUNEY/MOONEY, AND TAYLOR. These families were among the pioneers of Caldwell, Burke, McDowell, and Rutherford counties in western North Carolina. Her Craig ancestors came from Scotland via Ireland to America in 1684. The Eplys came originally from Switzerland via York County, Penn. The Mauney/Mooney family came from Alsace and Switzerland via York County, Penn. We believe her Taylor ancestors came to North Carolina from Albemarle County, Va. We would be pleased to share whatever information we have on these families and equally pleased to receive new information on them. Murray Scott Downs, Raleigh, NC | |
