The date of arrival, birth place and date of Thomas Pursell not known - his 1st officially recorded residence was on Staton Is. - now Richmond Co., N.Y. (formed 1683, had been a Dutch colony since 1625).

Purcell is usually regarded as an Irish name, though the most famous man so called, Henry Purcell, the composer, was English. Both English & Irish Purcell's are of Norman descent, the latter being found mostly in the contiguous counties of Kil Kinney and Typperary. The picturesque ruined castle of Laoughmoe, the seat of the head of the family, is well known landmark near Thurles, to be seen from the mainline halfway between Dublin and Cork.
Although Norman, the Purcell's did not come to Ireland until some years after the Anglo-Norman invasion of 1172, when they became adherents of the great Butler (Ormand) family. In (Irish the name is written Puirseil. They were found as Bishops of Ferns and of Waterford and as abbots of Holy Cross and St. Johns, Kilkenny, but also as staunch fighters in the Irish cause.
