Notes by: Elke Hall
When James and Mary married by C. E. Wiggings on 26 Dec. 1877, James' age was given as 18, Mary's as 17. James was born in Montgomery Co. and Mary in Smyth Co. VA. Both were residing in Tazewell. James' parents were given as James Hall and Louisa, he was a farmer. Mary's parents were John and Margaret Herald.

James would have been born in 1859, and Mary in 1860. However, the 1900 Tazewell Census gives Mary's age as born in 1864, she would have been only 13 when she married.

The 1880 Tazewell Co. Census, Maiden Spring district, taken on 18 June 1880 shows James and Mary in household #345, James, 20, Mary A. 19, John A., 1, and Linna 2/12.
