  Notes for NEWTON LEWIS WALTERS:
An Article Written by Carol Lee (Walters) Thacker, daughter of Newton and Ethel.

Newton and Ethel were born at Hoge's Chapel, Va. moved when very young to Pembroke where they have since lived.  Both graduated from penbroke High School.  There their courtship began in 1929.  Newton attended National Business College and Ethel Radford State Teacher college.  She taught one
year at Kire, Va., a one room school, and four years at Pembroke Elementary.  About 1934 Giles County School Board made a ruling that contracts would not be renewed for female teachers marrying after that
time.  Ethel and Newton decided they would marry secretly in Kernersville, NC telling no one but their parents, so she continued to teach until June 1937.  She worked at Celanese for three years, then became "just a housewife".

Newton was a volunteer fireman, a councilman when Pembroke was acquiring the Water Company and planning the Municipal building and on board of directors of Castle Rock Golf Club during its early years.  He is a member of Pembroke Ruritan Club, Castle Rock Masonic Lodge #334 and Presbyterian
Church.  He worked at Celanese for 35 years until disabled by a stroke 7-3-1975.

Ethel is a member of Pembroke Christian (Disciples of Christ) Church, taught in Sunday School and was one of the first two women Deaconesses (1950) and one of the first two women Elders (1982) in her church.  She is a member of Pembroke Woman's Club, enjoys crafts and genealogy.  She is a
descendant of Revolutionary War soldiers Charles Lucas, Sr., William Lucas, George Williams, Thomas Marshall, George Fry, Sr. and Jr.; early Giles settlers Martin Hartless and David Johnston; and Confederate soldiers Joeph Cephas Lucas and Gloyd Givens Williams.

Newton is a descendant of George ( from England) and Christina (Crewey, from Holland) Walters.

They have two daughters. Anita Jean and Carol Lee.

Anita Jean (11-20-1938) graduated from Radford College, received her Masters Degree from Old Dominion University, and teaches in Charlotte, NC where she and her family live.  She married 2-23-1963 Benton Gale Pendergraph (3-13-1940), son of Benton and Doris (Gale) Pendergraph,
Norfolk, Va.  They have two daughters:  Kimberly Denise (8-11-1968) and Nicole Michele (8-28-1971)

Carol Lee (7-29-1943) graduated from National Business College and is an accountant for Radiations Systems.  She married 12-21-1963 Rile Edgar Thacker (10-30-1943), son of William and Frances (Jones) Thacker.  "Ed" graduated from VPI, received a Masters Degree from UVa., and is employed in
the Administrative Department of Fairfax County Schools.  They have a daughter, Belinda Karen, (6-2-1971) and a son, Brian Randall (4-25-1973) and live in Sterling, Va.
