ILLIAM F. DOYLE:
William F. Doyle as written by Sarahjane Doyle Nelson Swarstad

William F (Floyd?) Doyle, occupation Farmer, was born circa 1796/98 in Charles Co., MD. He was the son of David and Frances Doyle. We know this fact from his 2nd and 3rd marriage records in Montgomery Co., Va. He traveled; when we aren't sure; from Charles Co., Md. to Bedford Co., Va. and Married Margaret Burgantine 13 Feb 1820, Marriage Index 229 Sec 5, Chap 10, and documents, in Bedford Va. She was under the age of 21 because her brother had to sign the request for their marriage. She was born in Pennsylvania - 1850 Census Montgomery Co., Va. Her parents were Peter and Margaret Burgantine. We aren't sure of the last name spelling since on the marriage record there are two spellings BURGENDINE and BURGANTINE. Later, in 1849, in the will of her Mother," Margaret", Montgomery Co., Va. 7 May 1849, the spelling also found to be BURGENDOINE.

Sometime , after they were married in 1820, they moved to Shawsville, Va., in Montgomery Co., Va., near Christiansburg, Va. In 1830 he purchased from Halpain Zachaprial Stanley, 100 acres on the waters on North Fork of Roanoke River in Montgomery Co.,Va. (Book O page 517, Deed Record of Montgomery Co., Va.) This land was near the Big Tunnel in Shawsville, Va. The 1850 Montgomery Co, Va. Census, lists the value of the property as $3,500.00. Also proven by 1830, 1840, 1850, and 1860 Census of Montgomery Co.,Va. lists wife as Margaret, housewife, born in Pennsylvania. The 1870 Census lists him with wife Le Anne whom he married in 1867. So , Margaret died between 1860-1867. It is believed she is buried near Shawsville, Va.

The date of his death is unknown. It is believed he was buried in Christiansburg, Va. However, the old cemetery, behind the courthouse, markers were destroyed by vandalism and I was unable to locate the grave.

The other marriages were :
#2 Le Anna Martin Moses, 10 Oct 1867- both were widowed, he was 70 yrs and she was 50 yrs, in Mongomery Co.,Va.

#3 Hannah Bradford, 20 May 1873, both widowed, he was 74 yrs and she was 40 yrs, her parents were; James and Margaret Faut, in Montgomery Co., Va.

Note by Wade:

1. 1820 Bedford Co., Southern District, Va. in John Burgantine household there are 2 children under 10, one male and one female, 2 males and 2 females between 16 and 26, and one female over 45. I think this is John, his wife, and one child ; William and Margaret Doyle and one child ; and Margaret Burgendine, the Mother of John and Margaret. Leonard may have been one of this children.

2. In the War of 1812 Service Records a William Doyle is listed as a Private, 5 Regiment Virginia Militia. William was about 17 or 18 at this time if he went in 1813. A John Burgentine is listed as a Private , 5 Reg't (McDowell's) Virgina Militia. John would have been about 18 or 19 . The war took the 5th Regiment to the Chesapeake Campaign.(see below).
William was born in Charles Co., Maryland. A David Doyle is listed as a Private, 43 Reg't (Hamilton's) Marland Militia, Charles Co., Maryland. His age could have been around 45 to 55 at that time. ( In 1818 Bedford Co. Va., Revolution War Pension App. lists David Dole, age 64. ??)
In a book, "The British Invasion of Maryland, 1812-1815" by William M. Marine, the British divided forces and went up the Potomac River, Patuxent River, and the Chesapeake Bay on their way to burn Washington, DC. St Mary Co. and Charles Co. were over ran by the British, burning towns and homes and destroying the country side.

3. These show that the 5th Reg Va. Militia got men in and around Bedford and served in Maryland.

On March 9, 1814, Thomas Staley was mustered into a company of infantry under command of Captain William Jones, detached from the 43rd and 110th Regiments, Franklin County, and attached to the 5th Regiment Virginia Militia commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Edward Jones. Thomas served from March 9, 1814, to June 29, 1814, and was listed as "on furlough" on March 17 from Norfolk, Virginia. (A different muster roll states that he was "left sick on the road, March 17, 1814.") When Thomas was mustered as a Private into the 5th Regiment (McDowell's): McDowell was from Rockbridge, Va. of the Virginia Militia (Captain Thomas N. Burwell's Company) two months later on September 3, 1814, he was listed as living in Botetourt County, Virginia. Thomas' period of service ended on November 30, 1814, and he was mustered out the next day, December 1, 1814, Camp Crossroads, Maryland. However, he was paid through December 14 to defray the cost of his trip home, 280 miles south of Camp Crossroads, Maryland. The last record we have of Thomas is his paycheck for the service he rendered in the War. He signed it over to John Boshel on March 15, 1815. His signature reads, "Thomas Stilley." \

Robert A. Combs was born on Feb 18 1779 in Loudoun County, Virginia. He served in the military in 1812 in Virginia. 5th Regiment Virginia Militia

David DRYDEN was born on 25 Sep 1793 in Washington Co. VA. He served in the military on 15 Sep 1813 in 5th Regiment, Virginia Militia. He served as a Private, first in the company commanded by his uncle, Lieutenant Nathaniel Dryden and then in Capt. Willie Jones' company. During this time, he was stationed near Norfolk, VA serving as camp guard and on picket duty. While there, he witnessed an engagement between USD gunboats and British barges off Craney Island. Later in life, he received land and warrants.
