He had his arm torn off in a spoke mill (where he worked). He walked 14 miles to a hospital carrying his arm, it was damaged too much to put back and there wasn't enough medical knowledge then. He was only 18 years old when it happened.
Even with only one arm, Robert Downy was a good shot with his 22 Cal. Rifle. It was said that during a flood in Mississippi, no one could get to the stores, and Robert Downy got in his boat and paddled to what had turned into a small island because of the flood and shot enough rabbits to feed his family and the neighbors for one week until the flood was over.

28.James Evan Manuel Brooks, Jr, born April 25, 1852 in Coffee County, AL; died January 28, 1930 in Mt. Olive, Simpson County, MS.He was the son of 56. James Evan Manuel Brooks, Sr and 57. Harriet M King.He married 29. Simmie Perniece Brown January 16, 1873 in Simpson County, MS.
29.Simmie Perniece Brown, born January 16, 1853 in Simpson County, MS; died March 21, 1937 in Mt. Zion, Simpson County, MS.She was the daughter of 58. John Puritan (Perdom?) Brown and 59. Simmie Perniece Brown.
Notes for James Evan Manuel Brooks, Jr:
After his mother died and his father re-married, he lived in an orphanage for a while. He ran away to Mississippi and lived with Plez and Nancy Walker in Simpson County. Years later, he returned to Alabama and brought his brother Francis Marion with him. They worked in a "Turning Mill" near old Westville, After another year, he returned to Alabama and brought his sister, Sallie, with him. She also lived with the Walkers
E M met Simmie P. Brown at services at Old Westville Church. Told his friends he had met a "pretty little curly red-head" whom he intended to marry. At the mill, he made a dining table to use in his future home. This let people know that he soon was to be married! They first settled on the north side of Highway 13 near Pinola, MS. He said the place had a pretty little brook. He moved again, this time to a place near where he bought a permanent home. This home was probably built by Hugh Walker, from whom he bought the land.Later he moved to Rials Creek where he had moved his mill -- moving back still later to his regular home.
Around 1900 he moved to Weathersby, MS. In 1902 moved to Magee, MS and then, finally (for the third time) returned to his country home.
E M Brooks was a prominent man in the affairs of Simpson County for many years. He was in the horse trading, lumber, and sawmill businesses, as well as being a farmer. The town of Weathersby was incorporated in 1902 with E M as Mayor. He performed many wedding ceremonies. And it was customary for him to present each bride with a silver dollar. He augmented his farming with selling mules. He made regular trips to Texas to buy mules and drove them back to MS. Along with his many Negro helpers, he spent many nights camping along the way.
He and his wife spent ten days each spring at Hot Springs, AR staying at the "Arlington". Late each summer, they spent a week at Allison's Wells, MS. Many times they spent some time at Mineral Wells, TX.
Good evidencesupports the conclusion that E M Brooks of Simpson County had three given names (a common practice in the mid-1800's) and that he was sometimes referred to as "Jr." The family traditions in the history of Nancy Brooks Adcock and in the genealogical notes of Cleo Brooks Posey referred to him as E M Brooks, Jr. However, documentation developed during this research has shown that the father of E M Brooks (Jr.) was not E M Brooks Sr., as might have been inferred but rather James M Brooks. The death certificate of E M Brooks lists J M Brooks (b. AL) as his father and Harriet King (b. AL) as his mother. The censuses show how this matter might be rationalized.
In the 1860 Hinds County, MS census, he was listed as J E Brooks along with his mother (H M Brooks) and his brother (F M Brooks) and sister (S L Brooks), while his father was listed as J M Brooks.
Ten years later, in the 1870 Rankin County, MS census, after his father had died and his stepmother had disposed of the children, he was listed as James M Brooks, Jr along with his sister, Sarah L Brooks; they were living with the David Till family and he was said to be a farmer at the time.
After a passage of another ten years, he was listed in the 1880 Simpson County, MS census as Evan Brooks (along with Simmie and several of their children).
From then on he seems to have been known in censuses and land dealings as E M Brooks.
The names James and Evan were the given names of his father and grandfather. It is possible that the name Manuel was also the middle name of his father, James M Brooks. So it is reasonable to believe that the full name of E M Brooks of Simpson County was James Evan Manuel Brooks, and that in his early life he was occasionally known as James Jr. One can only conjecture why E M Brooks dropped his first given name, James, which is clearly indicated in the Hinds County census of 1860 and in the Ranking County census of 1870.
Possibly he resented the fact that his father James "ran off to war" and left the children to the mercies of the stepmother, so that perhaps he decided to quit using the name James (or James Jr). In any case he and Simmie never gave the name James to any of their sons, and apparently he dropped use of his first given name altogether after settling in Simpson County.

Notes for James Evan Manuel Brooks, Sr:
In 1830 and 1840 James M Brooks was living with his parents , Evan and Sarah Brooks in Pike and Dale counties, respectively in Alabama.
By 1855 he had married his first wife and they and their three children were living in Coffee County, AL. Some time after 1855 this family left Alabama and moved to Mississippi.
By 1860 they were living in Hinds County, MS, possibly near Clinton, where James M brooks was employed as an overseer on a farm.
Apparently his first wife Harriet died some time around the latter part of 1860 or the first part of 1861.
After the outbreak of the Civil War, James M Brooks volunteered for service, enlisting for three years on May 17, 1862 in Jackson, MS. He served as Private in Captain Clanton's Company. (Company F) of the 28th Regiment, Mississippi Volunteer Calvary, commanded by General Starks. He was a teamster or wagoner and was stationed in Grenada where he died on December 10, 1862. possibly in one of the many influenza epidemics of the time. No names are on the tombstones in the old Confederate Cemetery in Grenada where James M Brooks was buried. Each tombstone (about 170 in total) has only the inscription "Unknown Confederate Soldier" and a Confederate emblem. In 1863 James M Brooks' widow, Mary Elizabeth "Thomas" Brooks, was living in Rankin County, MS where she filed a claim for back pay, commutation, bounty, or other allowances for his services.

Notes for John Brooks, Sr:
Neither the birthplace nor the parentageof John and William Brooks is known with certainty. The tradition that has been passed down through Brooks descendants who still reside in present-day Anson, Union, and Stanly counties in North Carolina suggests that John and William Brooks were English immigrants. It is is said that they spent some time with relatives in Culpepper Co., VA, then visited other relatives in Orange Co. (later Chatham Co.), NC, before settling in the Rocky River area of old Anson Co.
The area in which John and William initially obtained land is located on the banks of the Rocky River which flows roughly west to east and forms the boundary between present-day Anson and Stanly counties. The Brooks land was several miles upstream from the confluence of the Rocky and Pee Dee rivers where Richardson's Creek joins the Rocky River near the present-day Union Co. line. Many details of history of this area and its early settlers may be found in local histories of Anson, Montgomery (formed from Anson in 1779), and Stanly (formed from Montgomery in 1841) counties.
Although the early settlers of the region, including John and William Brooks, cleared land for their plantations in the 1750s (and even earlier), some years elapsed before the influx of settlers forced them to survey and record their land.Probably the earliest land record for John Brooks, Sr., dated April 24, 1762, was for "500 acres in Anson County on both sides of Rocky River near the mouth of Coopers Creek joining both sides of Richardson's Creek and (a point) near Cribs Creek." The "Anson County List of Taxables for the Year 1753" lists both John and William Brooks, Sr. Unfortunately, disastrous fires in the courthouses in Montgomery Co. in 1835 and in Anson Co. in 1868 destroyed many records of historical and genealogical significance.
The family of John Brooks Sr. was active in the political and military affairs of the day.The famous Anson County Regulator Petition of 1769, in which settlers of the back country loudly voiced complaints against the colonial government and its agents, was signed by John Brooks, Jr. (along with many others). This was one of the first demonstrations by colonists against the Crown, and is considered to be one of the incidents which sparked the Revolutionary War.In addition, in December of 1770 John Brooks was recommended for commission as a Lieutenant and William brooks as an Ensign in the rocky River Company of the Anson County Militia. However, participation of John and William Brooks as officers of the Anson County Militia in battles of the Revolutionary War has not been documented, although the Battle of Colson's Mill was fought in 1780 within a few miles of their farm lands.
John Brooks, Sr. was still living when the Montgomery Co., NC, Tax List of 1782 was compiled; he was listed as an invalid with 150 acres of land and one slave.John's brother William had 758 acres in Montgomery Co. and 100 acres in Anson Co. with five slaves.Joh's son, John Brooks, Jr., had 900 acres in Montgomery Co. and 100 acres in Anson Co. with four slaves.
Evidence shows that John Brooks, Sr. had died by 1790.
