Notes for William Woodbine:
The 1841 census for the county of Cambridgeshire, England identifies only 29 individuals with the Woodbine surname. The Woodbines were residing in either the village of Littleport, the Ely Holy Trinity Parish, or in Doddington. With similar naming patterns, it is assumed that these Woodbines are related, but relationships prior to the 1841 census have not yet been established. The Woodbines who were in the Ely Holy Trinity Parish generally emigrated to New South Wales, Australia in the early 1850s, including John Woodbine (b. 1806), William Woodbine (b. 1831) James Woodbine (b. 1832), Richard Woodbine (b. 1834), and Thomas Woodbine (b. 1836).

An Elizabeth Woodbine (b. 1808) married John Cox, and was living in the village of Harston on the 1841 and 1851 Cambridgeshire census. Two of her sons, Robert Cox (b. 1833) and John Cox (b. 1841) later emigrate to Byron, Genesee County, New York. Elizabeth Woodbine Cox was born in Littleport, and is speculated to be either a sister or cousin of William Woodbine.

On the 1841 census for Littleport, Cambridgeshire, England, William Woodbine (age 50) and spouse Elizabeth appear with six children (Samuel, Henry, John, Mathew, Mark, and Charlotte). A William Woodbine (age 20), who is believed to be the oldest son, appears on an adjacent census page together with married oldest daughter Sarah Woodbine Walker (age 20) and husband Francis Walker. On the 1851 census, William Woodbine and spouse Elizabeth have only the two youngest children (Mark and Charlotte) still living with them. Oldest son William is married ( wife also named Elizabeth), and has two children (George & Hannah). Francis and Sarah Woodbine Walker are identified with children Mary, Robert, and Emma. Sons, Henry and JohnWoodbine are identified living in Ely, and son Mathew is not identified. According to a later 1860 U.S. census, son Samuel Woodbine married in the late 1840's, and based upon the birth locations of his children per the 1860 census would have emigrated to New York State in the late 1840s, but is not identified on the U.S. 1850 census.

Brothers William and John Woodbine follow Samuel Woodbine to New York State in the early 1850's . William's daughter Hannah later indicates an emigration year of 1853. The three brothers are documented on the 1860 U.S. census in western New York State in Byron, Genesee County, New York, A general emigration may have occurred in the early 1850's from the Isle of Ely area of Cambridgeshire, England to western New York State. It is noteworthy that Thomas Markley ( see Thomas Markley family file) emigrated in 1853, and reportedly emigrated first to Niagara County, New York before migrating to Michigan and Illinois (1860), with his children later migrating to Ottawa County, Kansas after his death

A second wave of emigration appears to have occurred in the 1870s. Robert Woodbine Walker (son of Francis and Sarah Woodbine Walker) emigrated in 1870, but followed wife Mary Ann Palmer's Markley family to Ottawa County, Kansas. Brother Samuel Woodbine Walker, who emigrated in the late 1870s, was in Ottawa County Kansas on the 1880 census, but by the mid 1880s was married and living in Genesee County, New York. Sister Elizabeth Walker emigrated to Byron, Genesee County, New York in 1876, where she later married Charles Ellingham, also an immigrant from the Isle of Ely area of Cambridgeshire, England. A Freeman Ellingham family, who was an uncle of Charles Ellingham, had previously immigrated to Byron, Genesee County, New York. Robert Cox and John Cox will also immigrate to Byron, Genesee County in the 1870s. John Cox is believed to be married to oldest Walker family daughter Mary Walker, but this is unproven.
