* Naab Family in Schwabsburg-Nierstein, Germany*

Updated November 27, 2005

The meaning and origin of the name 'Naab' is unknown and shrouded into mystery. Mostly it is thought it is connected with the city of Nabburg, located in Bavaria, Germany, at the Naab River. According to one source the word Naab itself is of Indo-Germanic origin meaning ‘damp’, ‘moist’ and is related to the German Nebel ‘fog’, ‘mist’. There is presently no family by the name Naab living in Nabburg itself and there are indications that the Naab families left this area by the middle of the 16th century and moved to either Schwabsburg/Nierstein on the Rhine River, refusing to reconvert to Catholicism, in the course of the Counter-Reformation starting around 1540, or to the Palatine( Landau, Pfalz)and Alsace region. It seems that the members of the latter are mainly Catholic. Some members of the family have emigrated from Schwabsburg/Nierstein directly to the US, England and also to Russia during the reign of Empress Catherine and, as the promises in Russia were not kept, some moved then to the US.
The present Family Tree starts in 1580 with the first known member Gerhard Naab in Schwabsburg; any information pertaining to the history and any other member of the Naab family, not presently mentioned, are welcome.
