"MR. JAMES DROUGHEN - Mr. James Droughen the young man referred to inthe RECORD last Thursday as being very ill at his home here died thefollowing day. He was one of the company who became ill afterpartaking of the home-made taffy at a party in Merrickville. Theothers recovered soon afterwards from the effects of their illness,but in Mr. Droughen's case the symptoms were more alarming. He hadnot been in good health for some time and for some days previous tohis death he suffered from inflammation of the bowels. Deceased was23 years of age and was the son of the late Edward Droughen. He hadlived in Merrickville for the past few months were he had beenemployed as a moulder. His funeral took place on Sunday from hismother's residence to St. Francis de Sales church the remains beinginterred in the R.C. Cemetery." James was actually the son of the late Thomas, not Edward. "SUCCUMBED TO HIS INJURIES - Mr. John Drouchen who was seriously hurta few weeks ago by a fall from a telephone pole at Bishop's Millssuccumbed to his injuries on Saturday. "The death occurred in General Hospital, Kingston, on Thursday, July16th, 1964, of Edward Vincent Droughan of Smiths Falls, belovedhusband of Helen Healy Droughan. The late Mr. Droughan was born inSmiths Falls on January 27th, 1889, the son of the late ThomasDroughan and his wife Anne Foster. He lived his entire life in thetown of his birth. He was in the employ of the C.P.R. as Fireman andEngineer for 48 years retiring in 1954, since when he enjoyed a wellearned rest. In religion he was a devout Roman Catholic; a member ofthe Holy Name Society; the Altar Society and the Sacred Heart. Asinger of note from his youth, he was active in the church choir andparticipated in all church affairs. On September 23rd, 1913, he wasmarried to Helen Healy of Smiths Falls, and on September 23rd last Mr.and Mrs. Droughan celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary at theirhome, 15 Gladstone Ave. The deceased had been in failing health forsome time and after six weeks in hospital he passed to his reward. Heis survived by his wife Helen; predeceased by his parents, twosisters, Mrs. James McNamara (Margaret), of Belleville; Mrs. AlphonseBrady (Mary) of Toronto; and three brothers, John and James of SmithsFalls and Thomas of Hamilton. Three nephews and three nieces survive,Edmund McNamara, Calabogie; Patrick Droughan, Santa Monica, Calif.;Charles Brady, Toronto; Mrs. John Joseph Taylor, Westmount, Que.; Mrs.Edward Storey, Guelph; and Miss Patricia McNamara, Belleville. The funeral took place from the Amy Funeral Home, Smiths Falls, to St.Francis de Sales Church were Requiem mass chanted by the Rev. J. LeoHealy, Chaplain of Providence Hospital, Detroit. Mrs. Leonard Doylethe organist and soloist, rendered two favorite hymns of the deceased;"Lord of Mercy and Compassion" and "Treading the Path." Present inthe Sanctuary were the Rev. F. M. O'Connor, acting P.P., Smiths Falls;the Rev. Patrick Cavanagh, London an the Rev. J. P. Healy, P.P.,Lanark. The remains were laid to rest in the Parish Cemetery.Prayers at the graveside were offered by Rev. Leo Healy, assisted byFather Cavanagh and Father Joseph Healy. Beckwith Street under the name of Lena Droughan,which was the name she was commonly known by. Her family was quitewell off, and she was known to own several boarding houses in Smith'sFalls. She stood up for her cousin, Shirley Droughan at herconfirmation. Lena was remembered as a very large woman. The obituary read... "Mrs. E. V. Droughan - The death occurred on Thursday, October 13,1966, in St. Francis General Hospital, of Helen Healy Droughan, widowof the late Edward V. Droughan. Mrs. Droughan was born in SmithsFalls on January 31, 1886, and was a lifetime resident of the town.She was the daughter of the late Dennis Cullen Healy and his wife,Bridget Agnes Flynn. The late Mr and Mrs Droughan were married inSmiths Falls on September 23, 1913, and celebrated their goldenwedding anniversary at their home, 15 Gladstone Avenue. Mr. Droughandied in July of the following year. Mrs. Droughan took an active partin the work of St. Francis de Sales Church. She was a member of theCatholic Women's League and of St. Francis General Hospital Auxiliary.On the occasion of the golden wedding celebration, the latterorganization presented to Mrs Droughan a lifetime membership and aPast President's pin, in recognition of her many years of loyalsupport. Mrs Droughan was predeceased by her husband, Edward, andthree sisters, Mrs J. M. Kingston (Edith), of Winnipeg; Miss RoseHealy, Smiths Falls; and Mrs S. J. Devine (Sadie), of Prince Albert,Sask. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. J. F. Sheehan (Mamie),Moose Jaw and Mrs Allan Lane (Eva), Smiths Falls; a nephew, Paul J.Devine, Toronto; and four nieces, Mrs Ralph Norris, Kansas City, Kansas; Mrs Wm. J. McKinley, Jr., Houston, Texas;Sister Rita Maureen, SNJM, and Miss Elizabeth F. Redmond, both ofWinnipeg. There are also several grand nieces and nephews and manycousins. The funeral took palce on Monday October 17, from the AmyFuneral Home to St. Francis de Sales Church, where Requiem High Masswas sung by Rev. Joseph P. Healy, P.P., Lanark. Present in thesanctuary were Rev. J. J. Fogarty, P.P., and Rev. E. J. Shea, both ofSmiths Falls, Rev. J. Leo Healy, Detroit, Rev. Peter Hussey, NorthBay, and Rev. H. R. Wiley, Kemptville. Mrs Leonard Doyle, organistand soloist, sang favourite hymns of the deceased. Burial was made inthe parish cemetery. Rev. J. Leo Healy led the prayers at thegraveside, assisted by Rev. Jos. P. Healy and Rev. P. Hussey.Honourary pallbearers for Mrs Droughan were: Dr. J. J. McGuire,Messrs. E. Ahearn, Arnold Gough, M. J. Hopkins, Wm. Powell, and Gerald Ryan.Active pallbearers were Messrs. The article read... "SMITHS FALLS WOMAN INJURED IN INTERSECTION CAR ACCIDENT - Two SmithsFalls women were admitted to the G.W.M. Hospital on Friday morning,near noon, with injuries received in a two-car collision at theintersection of Craig and Gore Streets. The injured were Mrs. EdwardVincent Droughan, who suffered cuts on her legs and other abrasionswhen she was thrown out of the car driven by her husband EdwardDroughan. Mrs. Allan Lane, Smiths Falls, a passanger in the Droughancar, received a broken rib. Mr. Droughan told police he was procedingwest on Craig street and was attempting a right turn on Gore street,while George Walker King, Perth, was travelling south on Gore street.The cars collided at the intersection. The Droughan car spun aroundon the road and proceeded west on Craig street a distance of 114 feetbefore it stopped. Damage to the Droughan car was estimated at $250.and to the station wagon which was owned by Carman Echlin and operatedby George King, $300. Dr. James Tweedle rendered first aid to theinjured women at the scene and afterwards at the hospital. ConstableJohn Riddell investigated the accident." |

Marriage Notes for EDWARD DROUGHAN and CATHERINE HEALY: The marriage record reads... "EDWARD VINCENT DROUCHEN AND HELENA JOSEPHINE HEALY - On this thetwenty-third day of September, nineteen hundred and thireen, I theundersigned priest, have married Edward Vincent Drouchen aged 24years, son of Thomas Drouchen and Anne Foster, and Helena JosephineHealy, aged 25 years, daughter of Denis C. Healy and Briget Healydeceased; in the presence of witnesses Norman R. Kay and Catherine M.Healy. Signed by Thomas Kelly, Priest." He and his wife were quite well off, but lived very modestly. Theynever had much to do with the other side of the family for somereason. Edward was recalled as being the type of man who never had acrease in his pants. The announcement read... "COUPLE MARK 50TH ANNIV. - Mr. and Mrs. E.V. Droughan celebrated their50th wedding anniversary on Monday of last week. They were present ata High Mass of Thanksgiving at their parish church, St. Francis deSales, Rev. J.J. Fogarty P.P. officiating. Mrs. Leonard Doyle,organist sang Schubert's "Ave Maria". This mass was followed by amass at which the Rev. J.P. Healy, P.P. of Lanark, and cousin of Mrs.Droughan, officiated. Mr. and Mrs. Droughan (formerly Helen Healy)were born in Smiths Falls, and on September 23, 1913, they weremarried in St. Francis de Sales Church by the late Rev. Thomas Kelly,Pastor. They have lived in Smiths Falls all their lives and havealways taken an active part in church and community work. Mr.Droughan is a retired CPR engineer. In the afternoon, at theirresidence, 15 Gladstone Ave., and also in the evening, they were "athome" to friends. Congratulations and good wishes were gracefullyreceived by this popular couple. The home was decorated with goldenbells and other golden emblems pertaining to the day and beautifulflowers and plants were in abundance, gifts of friends and neighbors.Guests of honor were Mrs. Earl Caseman, of Toronto (nee KatherineHealy, formerly of Smiths Falls) who was bridesmaid of her cousin,Mrs. Droughan, and the only remaining one of the immediate weddingparty of fifty years ago; also Mrs. J.F. Sheehan, Moose Jaw, Sask,sister of Mrs. Droughan, and Mr. Sheehan. Among the guests were Mrs.Fred Horan, Mrs. Frank Horan, and Miss Margaret Horan of Perth." |
