"CERTIFICATE OF DEATH - In Wentworth Co., Barton Twp., City ofHamilton, 1014 King St. E. Edward Droughen, married, age 79 years,born 15 May 1853, Ireland, retired Iron Moulder. At residence for 7months, in Ontario for 78 years, parents James Drouchen born inIreland and Mary Nagle born in Ireland. Informant, James Drouchen,son, of 1014 King St. E. Date of death 30 June 1932. Medicalattendant Eli Playfair MD, states he attended deceased from 15 Apr1932 to 30 Jun 1932. Cause of death chronic intestinal obstruction (4months) caused by carcanoma of the colon. Burial at Holy SepulchreCemetery on 2 July 1932, Gormeley - Dermody Funeral Home at 7 EastStreet, Hamilton."


Edward was confirmed as an adult.
He was retired at the time of his death.
Edward had only lived on King Street for 7 months before his death.

" DROUCHEN - At his late residence, 1014 King Steet East; on Thursday,June 30, 1932. Edward Drouchen, beloved husband of Annie Digman, inhis 80th year. Funeral Saturday morning at 8:30 o'clock from theresidence of his daughter, Mrs. Wallace McEwen, 473 Wilson Street, toSt. Ann's Church, for requiem mass at 9 o'clock. Interment at HolySepulchre cemetery."

"EDWARD DROUCHEN - Following a lingering illness, the death occurredthis morning at his residence, 1014 King Street East, of EdwardDrouchen. The deceased was born in Ireland 79 years ago, but hadspent most of his life in this city where he was well known. He issurvived by his wife, formerly Annie Dignan; two sons, James andThomas, of this city; five daughters, Mrs. J.P. Murphy, Owoosa, Mich.,; Mrs. Eric Hoover, Pontiac, Mich.,; Mrs. C.P. Lessard and Mrs. W.McQueen, of this city, and Miss Oleida at home. The funeral will takeplace Saturday morning at 8:30 o'clock from the residence of hisdaughter, Mrs. W. McQueen, 473 Wilson Street, to St. Ann's Church forrequiem mass at 9 o'clock. Interment will be made in Holy SepulcherCemetery."

Born at Smith's Falls; Ontario,she had been a resident of Hamilton for the last 45 years. She was amember of St. Patrick's Church, and of the Catholic Women's League.Surviving, are two sons, James, and Thomas, at home; four daughters,Sister Mary Doreen, of St. Joseph's Community, Toronto, Mrs. MaryMurphy, and Mrs. Wallace McEwen, both of Hamilton, and Mrs. EricHoover of Pontiac, Michigan; two brothers, James, of Toronto, andBartley, of Smith's Falls; and one sister, Mrs. John O'Keefe, ofSmith's Falls. " DROUCHEN - At the residence of his brother in law, Mr. WallaceMcEwen, 137 Burris St. on Friday, Dec 3, 1958. Thomas Drouchen, dearbrother of Mrs. Eva Hoover, Pontiac, Michigan, and Rev. Sister MaryDoreen, SJ. St. Micheals Hospital, Toronto. Funeral Tuesday morningat 9:30 o'clock from the P.X. Dermody Funeral Home, 3 East Ave. S, toSt. Patrick's Church for requiem mass at 10 o'clock. Interment atHoly Sepulchre."


Thomas was part of the 116th Battalion from March 1917 until his beingdischarged. His discharge papers state that he was found to bemedically unfit for service and with the 173rd Battalion. Thomas hadthe rank of Private upon his discharge. In 1919, he was being paid$70.00 a month for his services, from which he sent $20.00 a monthhome to his mother.

In his first year of service, he was fined and given detentions forbeing drunk, and being AWL on numerous occasions. Thomas was shippedout to England on 21 Nov 1916, and was transferred to the 2nd CanadianReserve Battalion in Shoreham, England. He continued being fined forhis drinking for a short time, while overseas. On 26 Apr 1917, he wasshipped to East Sandling, France to join the 116th Battalion. Whilein Pernes, France, he first became ill in Novermber of 1917 withTrench Nephritis (inflammation of the kidney). He spent the firstmonth in the 2nd Canadian Stationary Hospital in Outreau, France, thenwas transferred to Whipps X War Hospital, in Leytonstone, Colchester,London, England.
There he was found to have traces of albrimen in his system, as wellas nephritis. He spent 5 months in various hospitals for nephritisfrom which he recovered from, but was rather debilitated afterwards.In July of 1918, he was diagnosed with debility (lack of movement dueto long stay in bed) following nephritis, which plagued him up untilhe was discharged. He was in and out of the hosptial throughtout therest of his stay in the service. He generally complained ofbackaches, tiredness, depression, swelling of face, hands, and ankles,headaches, pains in legs and knees. In Dec of 1918, he wastransferred back to Canada and stationed at Exhibition Camp, Toronto.While in the military, he was issued a War Service Badge of Class A,97148, and Class B.C. 51501.

Sister Doreen had suffered several stokes and was unable tocommunicate the last 5 years of her life.

"DROUGHEN, SISTER DOREEN (AGNES OLEDA), C.S.J. - Peacefully, in St.Jospeh's Infirmary, Willowdale, on Friday, February 16, 2001.Daughter of the late Edward Droughen and Ann Dignam. Predeceased byher sisters Catherine (Mrs. C. Lessard) 1945, Mary (Mrs. J. Murphy)1951, Elizabeth (Mrs. W. McEwen) 1955, Eva (Mrs. E. Hoover) 1964 andbrothers James 1949 and Thomas 1958. Survived by nieces and nephews.Visitation at St. Joseph's Convent from 2 p.m. on Monday, February 19,2001, for Vigil Service 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial onTuesday, February 20th, 2001 at 7:30 p.m. Interment on Wednesday,February 21, 2001 in Holy Cross Cemetery."


She was 32 years old at the time. Her personal file at Sisters of St.Joseph lists her baptismal name as Agnes Oleda Droughen.
Sister Doreen's ministry was of a clerical/administrative nature.Over the years, she worked in the various Toronto health careinstitutions run by the Sisters of St. Joseph.
