Thomas was part of the 116th Battalion from March 1917 until his beingdischarged. His discharge papers state that he was found to bemedically unfit for service and with the 173rd Battalion. In his first year of service, he was fined and given detentions forbeing drunk, and being AWL on numerous occasions. Thomas was shippedout to England on 21 Nov 1916, and was transferred to the 2nd CanadianReserve Battalion in Shoreham, England. He continued being fined forhis drinking for a short time, while overseas. On 26 Apr 1917, he wasshipped to East Sandling, France to join the 116th Battalion. Whilein Pernes, France, he first became ill in Novermber of 1917 withTrench Nephritis (inflammation of the kidney). He spent the firstmonth in the 2nd Canadian Stationary Hospital in Outreau, France, thenwas transferred to Whipps X War Hospital, in Leytonstone, Colchester,London, England. There he was found to have traces of albrimen in his system, as wellas nephritis. He spent 5 months in various hospitals for nephritisfrom which he recovered from, but was rather debilitated afterwards.In July of 1918, he was diagnosed with debility (lack of movement dueto long stay in bed) following nephritis, which plagued him up untilhe was discharged. He was in and out of the hosptial throughtout therest of his stay in the service. He generally complained ofbackaches, tiredness, depression, swelling of face, hands, and ankles,headaches, pains in legs and knees. In Dec of 1918, he wastransferred back to Canada and stationed at Exhibition Camp, Toronto.While in the military, he was issued a War Service Badge of Class A,97148, and Class B.C. 51501. |
