The "de Jonge/Cohen" family, the Netherlands, New York City

Updated September 23, 2003

About Our Family Research

I am tracing the family of my mother, Rika Elise de Jonge. She was born in the Netherlands in 1904. During World War II, most of her relatives were killed in the Holocaust. She survived and died in 1994. I have a large amount of information about her family, but there are still gaps in what I know. I am specifically looking for any information about one of her first cousins. Emilie Cohen was born in Beerta, the Netherlands on June 3, 1869. She moved to New York City in 1911, (I have the ship's manifest)and reportedly died impoverished in a "home" in New York, and was buried at the city's expense sometime during World War II. During her life, she worked as a fashion buyer for Bonwit Teller and traveled back and forth between the USA and Europe. I would like to know where and when she was buried and any other information about her. She was a colorful character, according to my mother's stories about this cousin.
