Merritt, James Monroe & Merritt Malone DUKE

I have been researching for ancestors of my 3rd Great-Grandfather, Merritt DUKE (b.abt.1784 NC d.abt.1854 TN) & Lucinda C. WILLIAMS (b.abt.1791 NC/SC d.aft. 1880 AR). Since beginning my research in 1996, I have compiled approximately 5,000 names of relatives & ancestors, branching to surnames of RUSSELL, CARLTON, McGOUGH, CONN, SPRADLEY, RICHARDS, BRUMBLOW, BARHAM, DAILEY, FILMER and have found ancestors such as Richard II-Duke of Normandy, Robert the Magnificant-Duke of Normandy, William the Conqueror-Duke of Normandy, Henry I-King of England & a 3rd-cousin, President William Jefferson Clinton. I have hit a dead end with Merritt DUKE and I can't seem to uncover anything before him.
My grandparents were Lawrence McKinley DUKE & Madie Ellen RUSSELL and Burnard Porter CARLTON & Maude Mae McGOUGH.

Can anyone help finding/connecting ancestors to my Merritt DUKE?
