PATRICK AND MARY ANN QUIGG By Dora Stewart Hogarth Copyright, 1987 Patrick Quigg (1833-1917) was one of the family of Alexander Jamie and (first name unknown) Alexander Quigg. He was born in Coleraine, County of Londonderry, Ireland. Some of the family went to Australia, some to Canada. Patrick, his brother Tom and sister Mary (1831-1922) came to Canada. Tom, it is thought, went west but his destination was never known. Mary married John Gilchrist (1831- 1915) and lived in Ceylon, Ontario. They had a son Tom (1871-1934) who became the popular village blacksmith. In 1925 he married Nellie De Rusha Arnott (1890-1975). Patrick was 19 when he arrived in Toronto, where he found work. Here he met and married Mary Ann Stewart (1835-1928) daughter of Charlie and (first name unknown) Croft Stewart. She was born in Newton, County of Tyrone, Northern Ireland. She and her sister Eliza (1837-1919) had also come to Toronto to find work. Eliza later became Eliza Cameron. After Patrick and Mary Ann's marriage, they left Toronto and made their way to Osprey Township in Grey County, Ontario. After a few years they moved to the nearby Township of Artemesia and lived on Concession 2, Lot 179, West Toronto and Sydenham Road, later known as the Binnie Farm. The area was called Tyrone. He bought the bush lots 166 and 167, Con. 2, W.T. & S.R. where he cleared the land and built a large white brick house for his now large family. He had a lime kiln just north of the house where he was able to get the lime. He bought the bricks in Proton. The Quigg children attended S.S. #3 (Red School) situated on Toronto and Sydenham Road, now Highway 10- Patrick served as trustee at this school for a few years. At that time dry cedar was bought for ninety-five cents a cord while good hardwood was eighty cents a cord. In 1888 he moved that Mr. Alex Reid be hired as a teacher for three hundred and fifty dollars a year. Mr. Reid stayed for eighteen years during which time several Quigg children attended the school. In later years the older sons of Tom Quigg attended the same school. Like many other settlers, he was able to accumulate enough money to invest in other properties. In 1890, he bought Lot 171, Con. 3, W.T. & S.R. and later sold it to his son, Tom. In Ceylon he had property next to his sister Mary (Mrs. John Gilchrist). Pat and his wife moved to Flesherton in 1907 to 37 Toronto Street. His son Harry then took over the farm. In 1908 when they were fifty years married, a family reunion was held on the old homestead, the last time the entire family had been together. Patrick died very suddenly at his home, April 11, 1917 in his 84th year. Mary Ann remained in the house as her sister Eliza (Mrs. Cameron) had come to live with her. After Eliza's death in 1919, Mary Ann sold the house. During the summers she lived with her daughter Em Stewart on the farm, but spent the winters in Harriston, Ontario with her daughter Mary, Mrs. Abe Brooks. She died in Harriston on Jan. 11, 1928. She, Pat and her sister Eliza are buried in Flesherton Cemetery.
