THE IMMIGRANTS FROM GERMANY
The Family of Andreas Meffert of Oberdorfelden was granted permission to emigrate in 1749
by the Landgrave of Hessen-Hanau. The family sailed to America on the ship Panier which arrived
in Philadelphia on 26 September 1749. The Same day all of the males which were above the age
of sixteen were taken to the courthouse in Philadelphia to take the Oath of Allegiance to the British
Crown.
Andreas had bought land in Chester County, Pennsylvania by 1753 and there on the tax list
appears his name as Andrew Mefford. That begins the many spellings of the name of Mefferd or Mefford or Meffort or Mifford and also the original spelling of Meffert.
The first four generations of this immigrant family were true pioneers who pushed westward and lived in log cabins in the wilderness of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Iowa and
Missouri.
