I am researching the surnames of Bolen and Bates. Henry M. Bolen, grandfather to Ruth Bolen Bates, was born in South Carolina and married JoAnn Hasty who was born in 1828 in South Carolina. His father was Thomas Bolen and siblings were William T. Bolen, Elizabeth Bolen and John Henry Bolen, who married Mary Jane McDonald and is my ancestor. They lived in South Carolina and Alabama. Related families are Hasty, McDonald, Jackson, Lavender, Bates. James Jefferson Bates,(who is Henry Bates' grandfather), was born in 1838 in Alabama, to Baalam Bates and Mary Seale Bates. Siblings were William Thomas, Anderson Cicero, Martha Bates Parmer and Rachel Elizabeth Kern. James J. Bates married Mary Seale, daughter of James and Rachel Kelly Seale. These families lived in Lowndes Co, Alabama and related families are Seale, Rencher, Zeigler, Parmer, Kern and Bailey.
