Ballysteen Castle

The Dundon family in County Limerick, in common with other Anglo-Norman families in Ireland, certainly seemed to have had some degree of power and influence in the area. This assertion is backed up by records which show the family owning Ballysteen Castle, near the town of Askeaton, Co.Limerick.

The family’s connection with the castle is mentioned on page 74 of "The Surnames of Ireland". Confirmation of this information was given by the Askeaton historian Patrick J Dundon to Rosemarie Campbell Dunden (sic) when  they met in 1992.

The Dundon family were dispossessed of their lands in 1666, following the invasion of Ireland by the Parliamentary Army under Oliver Cromwell, and the defeat of Lord Inchiquin at Limerick in 1650 by Henry, Oliver Cromwell’s son. The lands were subsequently taken over by the Westropp family, who still reside in the area. Sadly, nothing now remains of the castle.
