| Surnames that I am researching include the Dunn,s, Whetstone's, Van Eygen's (Wife's Family), Bradfield's, Walter's, Jenesske's, Haught's, Cunningham's, Talbot's, Melcher's, Yost's, Hall's, Reeves's, Kotha's, McMunn's, Martin's, Faggert's, Tuel's, Higgins's, Van Valley's, Cline's, and Lamb's. All these families are from, or lived at one time (except my wife's families, who are from Belgium), in southeast Ohio including Washington and Monroe Counties. WASHINGTON DUNN 1805-1894 Washington Dunn was born on October 6, 1805 (ref. Record of Death, Probate Court, Monroe Co. Ohio). According to this record he died from LaGrippe (the flu) February 26, 1894 at the age of 88 years, 4 months, and 20 days. Unfortunately, the place of his birth is unknown. According to census reports, he was a farmer. Washington Dunn first shows up on the Monroe County, Ohio tax records in the 1820's where he was paying taxes in alternating years with William Dunn on the same piece of property. In a deed, which shows he bought land on October 9, 1838, he says he was from Tyler County, Virginia. Tyler County is just accoss the river from Monroe County, Ohio. A search of Tyler County, Virginia records produced no information that Washington Dunn ever lived or owned land there. However, we believe he lived there sometime during the 1830's because Harvey and Caroline (two of his children) are listed as being born there in the 1850 census. In 1850, Washington Dunn was listed as being from New York. In the 1860 census he was again listed as being from New York. In 1870 census he is listed as being from Virginia and in 1880 from Pennsylvania. The 1880 census has his parents listed as being from Pennsylvania. From all this information it looks like he was either born in New York or immigrated to New York then moved to Pennsylvania. Then he left his parents and moved to Monroe County, Ohio sometime in the 1920's. There were two other Dunn's that showed up in Monroe County area around the same time, and could be Washington's brothers. Their names are Thomas 1810 and William Dunn 1794. They both indicated they were from Pennsylvania. Washington married Mary Martin (born Mar 11, 1806) sometime during the 1920's. She was the sixth child of Abner Martin and Sarah (Hoskinson) Martin. Washington and Mary's children were: John Martin, born November 14, 1827 Unknown female born circa 1830 Harvey Dunn born May 11, 1832 Caroline born circa 1838 Calvin born circa 1839 (Calvin did not show up in the 1850 census, and would have been 11 years old, however he did show up in the 1860 census). Virginia born circa 1840 Mary Martin died April 25, 1842 at the age of 36. Mary Martin and her father, Abner Martin, are buried in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Monroe County, Ohio. Washington Dunn was my great-great-great-grandfather. Still looking for his parents after 20 years. |
