******MAYFIELD******

Sampson Mayfield was my third greatgrandfather. He was born in Bledsoe County, Tennessee about 1822. Sampson's parents are unknown to date. He lived in Tennessee, probably in or near Roane County until the mid 1840's when he, along with his wife (Margaret Underwood)their daughter Mary Ann (Polly) and Margaret's family moved to the Bald Knob Mountain/Alto Pass area of Union County Illinois.

Sampson and Margaret had a large family including the following children: Mary Ann (Polly), Jesse, James, Serena, William Jasper, Nancy Elizabeth, Martha Jane, Phoebe Emmaline, Mahaly Jane, and Lalula Bernettie.

Sampson joined the Union forces during the Civil War. He signed on with the 109th Illinois Regiment Infantry. The 109th was later disbanded and Sampson transferred to the 11th Illinois Regiment Infantry. During his tenure with the 11th Sampson's experiences included battles and bouts with illness.

After the War Sampson returned to Union County for a time, but is found in Cape Girardeau County Missouri by 1870. Sometime after 1870 Sampson moved his family to the area of Greenway in Clay County Arkansas, where he died in 1877.

Please check the photos and genealogy reports below. I have included three generations of descendants of Sampson and Margaret in the Mayfield genealogy report and several photographs. I continue to search for photos of Sampson and Margaret and their children. I still don't have the grand daddy of all photos however, the one of Sampson dressed in his Union Infantry Uniform, but I know you are out there somewhere Sampson!!!

********GOTTLOB Family**********

My earliest identified Gottlob ancestor is Moritz Gottlob. Moritz was born in 1683 in the small village called Essentho, in the Westphalia area of what is now West Germany. Among Moritz' descendants was Johann Anton Gottlob,(my second great grandfather) who also was born in Essentho. Referred to as Anton or Antony, he immigrated to the U.S.A. in 1851 and settled in the Alton Madison County, Illinois area. See my report on the Gottlob family below.
