Notes for Otmar Karl Kallus: Otmar Kallus owned the Harness and Saddle shop in Schulenburg which was originally the George Herder Mercantile Store. It had been moved from High Hill to Schulenburg about the time the reailroad came to Schulenburg. Then it became the August Herder Saddle Shop then Otmar's son-in-law Joe Kleckar had the Saddle and Harness Shop and finally it was called the Joe Kleckar Upholstery Shop. The story is told that about the time the cars appeared in Schulenburg OtmarKallus had his son Robert take their horse out in the road so that Charlie Vogt could drive his car by slowly several times to get the horse used to the automobiles. In 1920 the Otmar Kallus Harness Shop sold tires and tubes guaranteed for 6000 miles. Ludmilla lived to the ripe old age of 95 and spent her entire life in the same part of Schulenburg where she was born 6/7/1872. Her parents were among those who donated land for the railroad in Schulenburg. |
