Will of James R. Watson 1837
Abstract from Record Book A-1, 1821-1838, Bond Co. IL: p. 390.
First I give and bequeath to Catherine my Dearly belove Wife my mare and colt, and cow and yearling, and all my house hold and kitchen furniture, and all other of my livestock excepting a sufficient quantity of pork to be sold sufficient to pay all my just debts; During her life.
And to my son Joab Watson I give one Dollar, and to my son Fielding Watson I give one Dollar, and to my son Isaac Watson I give one Dollar and to my Daughter Sarah Deweben I give one Dollar and to my Daughter Elizabeth Gilmore I give one Dollar and to my Daughter Mary Clanton I give one Dollar.

The following information was compiled by Mark Watson:
James Watson appears on the tax rolls of Christian County for 1816, 1817, (1818 is missing from the Willard Library Collection) and 1819. He appears in the Todd County, KY (formed from Christian and Logan Counties in 1820) tax rolls in 1820, 1821, 1822, 1823, 1824, and 1826. James Watson stopped appearing in the Todd County tax rolls after 1826.
It is possible that James R. Watson lived in or near Richmond, Henrico County, Virginia, before he came to Todd County, KY. This is based on the relationship of James R. Watson to Allen Bryant, which is described below. Allen Bryant's daughter, Nancy Bryant, was born in Richmond, Henrico County, VA, on 5 May, 1815.
Todd County, KY, Deed Book B, page 356
18 August 1823. William L. Anderson of Montgomery County, TN appointed his friend John S. Anderson of Todd County, KY, his attorney in fact and gave him full power and authority to collect and receive all sums of money or property he was entitled to received of the Estate of the late William Anderson, decd of the City of London and Continent of Great Brittain. In right of and as one of the heirs and representatives of William Anderson decd by and through Edmund Anderson, decd his father, late of the county of Albemarle and State of VA, who was Brother and Devisee of the aforesaid William Anderson decd. According to his last will and Testament. The disposition of which said estate is now pending or lately determined by the Superior Court of Chancery for the Richmond district in the State last mentioned. /s/ Wm. L. Anderson; Witnesses: James R. Watson & Allen Bryant. Produced and proved by the oaths of James R. Watson and Allen Bryant. 6 September 1823." (sw note: the Edmund Anderson mentioned in the above deed is the spouse of Jane Lewis, who was the sister of celebrated explorer Meriwether Lewis. Thus, William L. Anderson was the nephew of Meriwether Lewis.)
The time frame during which James R. Watson paid taxes in Christian and Todd Counties, KY, coincides with the period of time in which Thomas Watson (A) owned Barkers Mill in Christian County, KY (near the Todd County line) and was building the Red River Forge in nearby Montgomery County, Tennessee. Thomas Watson (A) received permission to build the Red River Forge from the Montgomery County courts in 1815.
In 1824, James Watson paid taxes with a Joab Watson in Todd County, KY. In 1826, James and Joab were joined in paying taxes by John "Todd KY" Watson. John "Todd KY" Watson was the son-in-law of the John S. Anderson named in the above power of attorney, and he was probably the son of Thomas Watson (A). After 1826, James and Joab Watson left Todd County, KY and moved to Madison County, IL. Bond County, Illinois marriage records show that Joab Watson married Elizabeth Robinson there on 27 May 1828. This is consistent with the idea that James R. Watson and Joab Watson left Todd County and moved to Illinois.
The 1830 federal census for Madison County, IL lists James R. Watson and Joab Watson on page 172. Also listed on the same page, only two households away from James R. Watson, is Allen Bryant, the co-witness with James R. Watson to the above power of attorney.
