Jim was a veteran of World War II and served in the Navy.He was listed in "The Ilion Sentinel" July 12, 1945 on the honor roll of those who served.
My first remembrance of Jim Coman was when I was very young, under 9 years of age.He was dating my sister, Gwen, and they would come to our house. Many Friday nights, Jim and Gwen, and my two other sisters and brothers-in-law would come to watch the Friday night fights. They'd bring in pizza, and it was always a good time.I remember Jim because he was the only one who would pay any attention to "the bratty little sister" hanging around. He'd play with me, tease, and get me to giggle.I approved of Gwen's choice for husband right away!Jim was a happy go lucky fellow, always caring for others andlifting their spirits with a joke.I remember him as a tall man with a dignified manner about him.The thing I remember most about Jim is how much he loved children. He was always good with me and my friends and then with his own children when they came along. Many times Jim and Gwen would let me tag along when they went somewhere.I remember camping on the lake outside Richfield, visiting the Beadles, going swimming in the Schoharie Creek. They didn't have to bother to take me along, most people wouldn't, buy they did.Even when I was older, Jim arranged a date with one of his co-workers for me and again with one of their neighbor's sons.Nothing came of it, but the kindness and consideration of Jim and Gwen will never be forgotten.Jim was more than a kind, mannerly gentleman, he was a gentle man.He was also diligent in the pursuit of his career.Long after most of us would give up studying to improve our skills and job qualifications, Jim continued on.It seemed to me he was always taking another course on highway engineering.Over the years he worked for several construction companies and finally for the State of New York.Jim died at a very young age, only 48 years old.He has been sorely missed, and will never be forgotten.
