Notes for John Cowey: Was a Colliery Engineman. Has a gravestone in Coundon Churchyard. In 1853 a nine year old daughter,Dorothy,died at Sherburn Hill,his wife Ann died at the age of 31,apparently in childbirth and a second daughter called Dorothy died at Coundon in the same year aged 13 weeks.It seems likely that the family had moved to Coundon to forget their losses or perhaps to be closer to his brother Nicholas. When his wife died John was left with 8 children aged from 13 years to a few weeks old,it seems likely to me that Mary Conn,wife of Nicholas Cowey probably helped in these circumstances.
