While awarded Rifle Marksman Badge upon separation from Marine Corps, achieved both Sharpshooter and Expert levels during enlistment. Reason for low shooting score upon separation was because Russ knowing he was getting out of the Marine Corps in two weeks was shooting on the next Marine's target to help him qualify.
Russ and a life long Marine brother David Kooker were in Marine Corps' first class to be trained as Ground Radar Repairman (Technician) MOS 5931. The training led to taking antipersonnel radar into combat for the first time in history. The AN/PPS-6 Ground Radar Set was capable of tracking people, animals, and vehicles while being able to detect walking, running or crawling.
