My family comes, predominantly, from Ireland and England, with a few members being born in India and Belgium. The areas of Athy, Carlow and Wicklow in Ireland are significant for the McGrath side of the family, whilst the Gambrells had the good grace to stay in the Whitstable area of Kent. This has made my research easy for my Maternal Grandmother's line.

I have found that both my maternal and paternal great grandfathers were shady characters who both had a liking for women and drink.

I have been amazed by the amount of people who never bothered to formaise their union with a marriage certificate and simply lived as man and wife (often with somebody elses wife!)

My journey through time is relatively new but the more I learn, the more addicted I get to this hobby of family history. Now, when I begin a conversation with my husband about a family member, he stops me and askes "is this a living person or a dead one?"

"Does is matter?" I ask him. "They are all interesting."
