| Thomas SALMON is the first of the name I have found in Goochland County, Virginia. He was listed as the defendant in a case in Goochland County July 1728. He is mentioned in the boundary of Josias PAYNE's land patent in 1733 and John GODLEY's land patent in 1734. Thomas SALMON was granted a land patent in 1738 (400 acres on the branches of Lickinghole Creek adjacent Henry WEBB, Charles CHRISTIAN, SPURLOCK & Martin DUNCAN.) In 1740 Thomas SALMON and Benjamin SALMON were listed separately on the Tax List. In 1746 John SALMON was listed separate and Benjamin, Richard & John SALMON were listed together on the Tax List. In 1748 Benjamin, John & Joseph SALMON were listed together and Richard SAMONS was listed with John MAN on the Tax List. In 1751 Benjamin SALMON, George SALMON, Jacob SALMON, John SALMON were each listed separately and Joseph SALMONS was listed with John HOUCHENS and Richard SALMONS was listed with Whitehead RYAN on the Tax List. I find no reference to Thomas SALMON after the Tax List of 1740. From the above, I can assume and I stress this is an assumption: Thomas was the father who died after the 1740 Tax List. This leaves Benjamin (if age 16 in 1740 born 1724, John (if age 16 in 1746 born 1730), Richard (if age 16 in 1746 born 1730), Joseph (if age 16 in 1748 born 1732), Jacob (if age 16 in 1751 born 1735), and George (if age 16 in 1751 born 1735) as his sons. If this is the Benjamin married to Priscila Potter, being born ca 1724 would have made him 70 years old at his death in 1794. we know from deeds and the birth records of his children that he married about 1752 which would have made him 28 years old. If this is the John married to Naomi DePRIEST, being born ca 1730 would have made him 61 years old at his death in 1791. The first child born to them that is recorded is Jacob born June 6, 1759. I, however, believe that my James SALMON and WIlliam SALMON Sr were also their children, probably being born ca 1755 & 1757 making John age 27 at the first birth. I have found very little on Joseph, I believe he was overseer for David ROSS in Fluvanna County, Virginia. He is listed in the British Mercantile Claims 1775-1803 (statement of monies owed the crown after the War) where he is said to be very old and very poor. If he is the Joseph born 1732 that would have made him 68 in 1800. The older I get the younger this looks. Joseph is listed with John HOUCHENS in 1751. HOUCHENS were still neighbors of my SALMONS 100 years later. Jacob, George and Richard, nothing else. |
