Notes for James Bell Walker: The actual recorded birth for James is what was called the most "flexible" birthdate. The only actual recorded date is April, 1824 in the Hawkins County, Tennessee (District 90, sheet 9). All other birthdates for him are deduced from his recorded age at a particular time. In the 1850 census for Tazwell County, Virginia (No. 585) James Walker was listed as age 29 (b. 1821), in the 1860 Smyth County census (No. 12), he is listed as age 37 (b. 1823), in 1870 census he was 49 (b. 1821) but iin the 1880 census (No. 487/518) he was age 50 (b. 1830); the last date would definely be wrong. This writer's grandfather (**See note at end) always maintained that his grandfather was born in 1820, yet when James Bell Walker died in 1911, his obiturary listed his age as 86 (b. 1825) but his death certificate listed it as 93 (b. 1818).
**All information gathered for the Walker side of the family down to Harry S. Walker Sr. was received from a book called "Walking with the Walkers" by Edward R. Walker III. Published by the Overmountain Press P.O. Box 1261 Johnson City, TN in 1981
