Jacob was born in Germany and immigrated to the US in 1872 at the age of 21. He was a laborer when he arrived on the Baltic which sailed from Liverpool to NYC and arrived on 7/1/1872. (Germans to America-vol. 27; May 1872-July 1872; edited by Ira A. Glazier and P. William Filby--Olin Library E 184 G3 G385 1988 v.27--1/3/97) His name was spelled Ottermann on the ship's registers. His mother and father were born in Germany. He could read, write, and speak English and owned his own home at 48 Herman St. in Buffalo,NY.
