Notes for S
TEPHEN DAY:
"He was killed while taking a load of logs to Portland; a pin broke and the load shifted on him as he went down hill... Stephen Day and his wife Lydia Ann are buried in the family cemetery on the SW side of Hessian Hill Road, opposite the homes of Mrs. Millard Day and of Wilbury Day at Cornish. The story behind the hill's name is briefle as follows: A young soldier by the name of Stephen Day from Cornish was killed in a Rev. War battle near Bennington, Vermont, just over the Mass. border. His 'Buddy' was Franz Le Har, a Hessian soldier hired by the British, but who had deserted to the colonial side when he heard both sides of the story. Knowing he would be hanged as a deserter if caught, Le Har traded uniforms and papers with the dead Stephen and made his way to Cornish. There has been much speculation by those too far removed to know which of all the Stephen Days in Cornish was killed. After the war was over, Le Har resumed his own name, married an Abenaki Indian girl from Presidential Range, NH, and settled on the hill which has been called 'Hessian Hill' ever since. Family records prove that the Stephen who married Lydia is not Le Har..."

Notes for A
LVAH DAY:
There was an Alvah Day, son of Jesse Day and Hannah Jones, born March 30, 1834, in ME, died Aug. 12, 1860, unmarried. Could Jesse Day be brother to Alvah Day, husband of Sophronia? Found this info at familytreemaker.com/users/n/e/e/Nancy-K-Neely on report of Ancestors of Annie Florence Berry. Also contains lots of Parsonsfield folks.

Alvah is buried with his wife but his name is not on the gravestone. "Alvah first built a log cabin on the road between Cornish and Limerick. Then he moved to what was known as 'Pike Hill' into a very small house -- two or three rooms finished. They used a fireplace to cook their food. My father was 17 months old when his mother, Sophronia died,' wrote Marian Chamberlain." (source: "William Day and Dorothy Littlefield," p. 109)
