1. ROBERT ADAMS *² EATON (THOMAS *¹) was born July 02, 1812 in PHILADELPHIA, PA, USA, and died October 05, 1853 in TUSCALOOSA, AL, USA. He married LYDIA JANE * GILL April 25, 1838.

Notes for ROBERT ADAMS * EATON:
!Robert came to Jackson Co. Al. and established a newspaper at Bellefonte. He
returned home (Lancaster, Pa.) for a visit and brought his brother, Josephus
back with hime to Bellefonte. Robert turned the newspaper over to his brother
and he went to Tuscaloosa and founded another newspaper, did Gov. printing,
was elected Mayor of Tuscaloosa. Later he went Carrollton, Al. and founded
another newspaper. While in Tuscaloosa, Robert and his wife lost three
children in one week to scarlet fever. He had one son killed in the
Civil War-Jacab Harris( Harry)- in retreat to Atlanta. Harry was in the
Confederate Army.

! "Into the midst of these forces and counter-forces came a young journalist to
Alabama from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, by the name of Robert Adams Eaton. He was
driven by a desire to make a significant contribution to newspaper journalism
in Alabama and to promote his commitment to the Jacksonian wing of the
Democratic Party. He seemed to have been obsessed with an urgency to make his
mark in a short time. He came to Jackson Co., Alabama in 1836 at the age of 24.
When he died 17 years later at the age of 41 he had established four
newspapers, been editor of a fifth, produced a literary journal, served on the
City Council of Tuscaloosa and had been elected its mayor."

Notes for LYDIA JANE * GILL:
!SOURCE: a newspaper obituary of Lydia Gill Eaton Prude states that she was
born near Knoxville, Tn. ca. 1818 family records indicate her birth as 1813.
The 1870 Fed Cens indicates that she was borned in KY.( I'm inclined to believe
that the census record is in error as all family records and traditions have
her bn. in Tn.)

Lydia Gill had a sister , Elizabeth Gill. Elizabeth married Josephus Eaton, a
younger brother of Lydia's husband, Robert Eaton, who established a newspaper
in Bellefonte, Jackson Co., Al. Josephus would take over this paper, THE JACKSON
DEMOCRAT, when Robert moved on to Tuscaloosa. Jeff Tyron, staff writer for the
HUNTSVILLE TIMES, states , early in 1850's Eaton and printer, R. C. Gill, began
the BELLEFONTE DEMOCRAT". This seems to have been the successor paper to the
JACKSON DEMOCRAT. The Eaton here referred to is most likely Josephus Eaton as
Robert Eaton was in Pickens Co in 1850. The R.C.Gill may be a relative of
Elizabeth and Lydia Gill-possibly a brother.

The 1840 Census list James Gill as living in Jackson Co. ,the 1860 list a C.
F. Robert Gill living in Twp 3, Range 6 East of Jackson Co., Also Mary K. Gill
is listed as living in Carrollton, Pickens Co.Al. Eaton family records
indicate that Mary Gill was a sister of Lydia and Elizabeth who never married.

! SOURCE: Georgia Mathis Cummons in researching her gggrandfather, Robert C. T.
Gill states that he was born in TN in 1825 probably near Knoxville. She
believes his father was James Gill, born in 1784 in VA. and they eventually
settled in Jackson Co., AL. Robert was a printer and James had a tavern.
(We know that Robert C. T. Gill was a partner with Josephus Eaton in the
establishment of the "Bellefonte Democrat" in early 1850s. We also know that
Robert Adams Eaton had come to Bellefonte earlier and established a newspaper
and had later brought his brother Josephus Eaton down from PA. Robert Eaton
went on to Tuscaloosa, AL and founded newspapers there. Robert Eaton and
Josephus Eaton married Gill sisters, Robert married Lydia, bn 1813, and
Josephus married Elizabeth, bn 1821. It is very likely that Robert C. T. Gill
was a brother to Lydia and Elizabeth)

Notes for JAMES EATON:
!James died on the afternoon of Jan. 14, 1844. His brother, Lewis, age 3 yrs
and 7 mos., died the same day in the evening. Their brother , Thomas, age 2
yrs. and 8 mos., had died two days earlier on Jan. 12. James was 5 yrs. old. On
Jan. 25, 1844 a fourth brother , Robert Harris, age 9 mos., died. As of this
date this was all of the children of Robert A. Eaton and Lydia Gill Eaton. All
dead within one month of scarletfever.

Notes for ROBERT ISAAC EATON:
!Robert was first named Robert Mowl. Later his name was changed to Robert
Isaac. He was obviously named for Isaac Mowl, an uncle of his father.

!Robert and his brother, Andrew Henry, were the only children of Robert
Adams Eaton to reach adulthood with the exception of Jacob Harris who was
killed in the Civil War at age 20. Robert never married and was known by most
of his relatives as "Uncle Bob".

! SOURCE: Gravestone gives birth year as 1846, 1900 Federal Census gives birth
as Apr 1847. Family Bible records state Apr 1845.

! SOURCE: Alabama Mortality Schedule 1850, 7th census of U.S.
(this schedule listed Samuel Eaton- it is not certain that this was Lemuel

Gill Eaton, but is most likely as Lemuel died in infancy and very near the
same time as his sister, Mary Jane Eaton. Samuel is listed directly above Mary
Jane in the schedule and the age is right.)

! SOURCE: The old family Bible in the possession of Robert Owens Eaton,
Ethelsville, AL. gives Lemuel's birth date as 21 Mar 1848 and his death date
as 22 Feb 1850.
