2. WILLIAM WILEY *² LEWIS (CHARLES *¹) was born December 10, 1837 in ,EARLY CO, GA, USA, and died November 02, 1917 in OTIS, RAPIDES PARISH, LA, USA. He married MARTHA ANN * MCILWAIN Abt. 1859, daughter of WILLIAM MCILWAIN and EDNA WHEELISS.

! SOURCE: Letter from Inola Shows to Helen Lewis Eaton, dated 10-16-89. Inola
was a grand daughter of William Wiley Lewis I.

! "Grandpa Lewis[William Wiley Lewis I] worked for a wealthy family in or near
Mobile, Al. He and the daughter of the man he worked for, Martha Ann McIlwain,
eloped on two horses, swam down the river to escape, and were married. They had
3 children borned in Al. They moved to La. in ox wagon and three children were
born in La. Grandma walked most of the way and knitted. Martha Ann was
disowned by her family when she married 'beneath herself'. She did not see her
parents again. Grandpa Lewis was in the Civil War as Grandma got a pension
check in the amount of $90.00 every three months as long as she lived."

! 1880 CENSUS:(VOL. 12 e.d. 38, SHEET 15. LN. 3). William W. Lewis was 45 yrs
old at time of census thus making his birth year 1835. He was born in Ga.

! Dewill Cemetery is near St. Clair.

! SOURCE: Dr. Tommy Johnson. William Wiley Lewis, Sr. CSA Pension Application
and his CSA Discharge indicate that he is enlisted in Company C, 38th Regiment
Alabama Vols at Mobile on May 13, 1862. His commanders were Col C.T. Ketchum
and Cpt Augustus G. Moore. They were still his commanders when he was
discharged near Mobile on Nov 7, 1862. He was discharged because of physical
disability - paralysis of the lower right extremity. From then until the end
of the war he worked in a shoe shop in Choctaw County, AL making shoes for
soldiers. He moved from AL to near Anacoco in Rapides Parish in 1869.

! SOURCE: Dr. Tommy Johnson indicates that the marriage date of Martha to
William, Sr. is about 1849. This would have made her only 14 years old and
their first child was born in 1860. A more reasonable marriage date would be
1859.

!SOURCE; CENTRAL LOUISIANA FAMILIES IN 1880, by Verda Jenkins Ruff. Martha and
William W. Lewis were buried in DEWILL Fam. Cem., Hineston Ward.

! SOURCE: Dr. Tommy G. Johnson. When reviewing the l860 census of Choctaw
County, AL, it was discovered that Wiley and Martha had a five month old
daughter, Edna E. Since she is not on the l870 LA census, it is assumed she
died before l869.

about 1864.
