User Home Pages: The EBDON Family of Thorncombe, Dorset.
I have been researching my family tree for several years now and I have accumulated a considerably large amount of data and official documents on the EBDON family of Thorncombe, Dorset, England. The Thorncombe branch of EBDON's were mainly Stonemasons who worked very hard and were always busy, a lot of their work stands today as a memorial to them. Three sons of Samuel Ebdon (born 1843 in Thorncombe) and Christiana (formerly STOODLEY), moved to South Wales and continued the family tradition building quality homes and public buildings for the local miners. The first to settle in South Wales was Champness William EBDON, aka 'Fred' EBDON. Fred married Mary Ann PARRY of New Tredegar in 1896 at the Register Office, Bedwellty. Fred was joined in the South Wales valleys by his younger brothers Oliver F.A. and Harold Vere (my Great Grandfather). The three brothers built several streets of homes, public houses and other buildings in Blackwood in the Sirhowy valley. Albany road and Coronation road in Blackwood remain today and are still lived in, an example of the quality buildings built by the EBDON masons. Thorncombe road, Blackwood was named after the brothers birthplace in Dorset. Unfortunately the family tradition ended with these brothersand as far as I'm aware there were no more EBDON builders to follow in their footsteps, not in Wales anyway. Fred didn't have children and as yet I don't know what Oliver's sons did. Sadly Oliver died fighting in World War 1 and his name adorns the role of honour on the Cenotaph War Memorial at Blackwood. Harold Vere's sons Samuel and Rees both served in the Army before seeking other careers and my father Barrie (Rees' son) served in the RAF. I followed my father into the RAF and served in the Gulf War 1991 and had tours in the Falklands, Croatia/Bosnia and Germany. I left after 12 years service. My uncle Derick (Ricky) was a mason of a different kind. He became a singer after leaving the mines and toured as 'Ricky Mason' before changing his stage name to 'David Alexander'. His career took off in February 1971 with the release of his first single 'If I Could See The Rhondda One More Time' on the Columbia label and he had a very successful career. Sadly Ricky died in February 1995 in Tenerife but he still has fans all over the world and his widow Beryl intends to "keep him singing for a long, long, time yet" More recently, Michael has followed in his brother Ricky's footsteps and started singing. Michael has a lovely voice and its a shame that we never got to hear them both singing together live. To view the EBDON family tree click on the 'InterneTree' link below 'My Family History'. From the window that appears, click on 'Search', then 'Find Person'. From the list that appears scroll down and select the family name you require then click 'OK'. This will then display that persons immediate family. If you select 'EBDON, Elias (b. 1781)' and click 'OK', this will display all of Elias' decendants (the majority of the EBDON tree). If I have missed out any information please let me know so I can update the tree. My beloved father 'Barry Gwyn EBDON' sadly passed away in Sept' 2010 and I still haven't come to terms with his passing. The loss of such a close family member has made me doubt my own mortality and has posed so many 'life & death' questions. One thing that stands out for me now is 'life's too short' so don't bear grudges, don't put things off until tomorrow and try to live each and every day to the full.
