Ancestors of George Henry Custer, Jr.

Generation No. 4

      8. Mark Custer, Jr., born 1829 in Greene County, Pennsylvania (Source: Census Records 1830 Greene Co., PA, 1840 Tyler County VA/WV, 1850 Jackson County VA/WV); died 1863 in Jackson County, West Virginia (Source: John House's "Pioneers of Jackson County"). He was the son of 16. Mark Custer, Sr. and 17. Mary Margaret Kimble. He married 9. Mary Elizabeth Morehead 20 Jun 1850 in Jackson County, Virginia (Source: Marriage Record Jackson County VA/WV 1850).

She was the daughter of 18. Armistead Morehead and 19. Tacy Richards.

From John Houses' "History of Jackson County" page 250: "Mark Custer married Elizabeth Morehead,
daughter of Armistead Morehead. He lived on Island Run and on Copper Fork. He died in 1863. He had a son, Henry Custer. Miss M. Custer, who married Thomas McFarland was his daughter. Thomas W. McFarland was a son of one Robert McFarland. He lived on Trace Fork, in 1852, and for several years after, then moved to Big Lick, where he bought two hundred thirty acres of land. He lived there a year and then went to Mark Custer's, on Island Run, where he died before the war. His widow moved back to the farm, where she lived during the war. Afterward she married Chapman Grant." This is the only record I have found of Mark Custer, Jr's death. Miss M. Custer referred to in the history is Margaret Custer, daughter of Mark Custer, Sr.

Notes for Mary Elizabeth Morehead:
      1880 Census Jackson County West Virginia lists H. H. Sutton age 47, Mary E. age 47, Wesley C. age 8, Albert M. age 6, and V. Morehead age 16.

Henry H. Sutton died in 1906 in Jackson County age 76 Widower; so, Mary Elizabeth must have died 1900-1906 in Jackson County.

From George Wilson in an e-mail 16 Aug 2005:
Found the 1880 records online after I read your email. It also helped me fill in a little on his son Mark. However it still left me a few questions, like what month was Mark born, since it says 3M for his age, the online stuff doesn't always complete my questions. Knowing what month this was recorded in would solve that. It also said Mark H was born in Union, Jackson, WV,

  Notes for Edith Ann Hildreth:
From John E. Hildreth by way of Paul Copenhaver 27 Feb 2003:
I searched the newspapers in around Delta, CO and found
no mention of Edith's death. I also searched the mortuary records at Delta
as well as the Coroner's records - nothing. I somewhat doubt she died in
Colorado and was shipped back to Oklahoma for burial.
Dorothy and I visited the cemetery in Davidson, OK and saw the gravestone of
Edith. The Sextant records say nothing about Edith other than that was the
gravesite. I have written the newspapers of Frederick, OK (county seat) to
see if there might have been an article from that area. Evidently Davidson
did not have a newspaper at the time. I have already searched the death
records for the county in Oklahoma and they have no record of death..
Jesse Albert did not live in Delta but lived near a very small crossroads
called "Read". The family however was buried in the Delta Cemetery (at the
time of his death called the "Garnet Mesa Cemetery").
