Henry F. “Bud” Smith, 73, of South Charleston entered into rest on March 31, 2005, at Beverly Health Care Center, Glasgow.

He was born on Dec. 31, 1931, in Clay County, a son of the late Oscar Henry and Blanch Hosey Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, James Albert Smith; daughter, Debra Lynn Thornton; and granddaughter, Molly Francys Smith.

He attended Sutton High School. He served in the Korean War from 1950 to 1951 in five campaigns, receiving the Silver Star, the nation's third highest decoration for bravery, the Bronze Star with the V device for Valor, the Purple Heart with two oak leaf clusters and the Korean Campaign Medal with five bronze stars. He was a survivor of the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir.

He was a maintenance machinist for Ford Motor Company and a car salesman for Telford's Chevrolet, Clay, and Patrick Plaza Dodge, Charleston. He attended Big Otter Baptist Church and was a member of the VFW and the Fraternal Order of Police, South Charleston.

Henry is survived by his wife, Joyce Hickman Smith of South Charleston; sons, Thomas Wayne Smith of Dunbar, Robin Murry Smith of Barboursville, Jerry Lee Smith and wife, Jaime Dawson Smith, and James Franklin Smith and wife, Rita Runion Smith, all of Ivydale; daughter, Sharon Renee Smith Collins and husband, Roger, of Auxier, Ky.; grandchildren, Autumn Renee Thornton McCallister, Erin Page Thornton, Michael Ryan Smith, Roger Lee Collins, Patrick Jordan Collins, Justin Scott Smith, Jalen Brody Smith, Derek Lee Smith, Morgan Paige Smith and Mason Lee Smith; brothers, Oscar Junior “JB” Smith of Stuart, Fla., and James Denning Smith of New Matamoras, Ohio; sisters, Betty Margarete Smith Hunter of Leesburg, Fla., Lorraine Rae Smith Fletcher of Ambia, Ind., Martha Jane Smith Carter of Stuart, Fla., and Norma Jean Smith Blakely of Umatilla, Fla..

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, April 3, at Big Otter Baptist Church, Ivydale, with Pastor Rick Canfield officiating, assisted by Minister Darius Arnold. Burial will be in the Douglas Cemetery, Ivydale, with military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post 4419, Clay.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Carl Wilson Funeral Home, Clay.
