Notes for Agnes Nancy Pierson: Trying to find the death date for Agnes Nancy. Just checked the 1860 census of Roane County which borders Wirt and there was a B.S. Young listed and a Jonathan Young and a John Young. But that's all that was given except it was a Roxalana Post Office which means nothing to me. I think I just need to go to the archives and check the 1860 soundex (if there is one) for Bazel and find out if he was in WV during that time. (Brenda 10 Apr 2001) One source said she died in 1850. She is listed in the Braxton County 1850 Census. In 1860 both she and Bazel are not listed in Braxton County. In an e-mail from Kay Nixon 3 Jun 2001: Subject: Agnes Posted by: Susan Bail Adams Message: Yes, Agnes was my ggg-grandmother, also. She was b. 1791 to Joseph and Charlotte McKee Pierson who settled McKee's Creek, (Whitewater) Nicholas Co., WV. Joseph was the first school teacher in the area--even though he could barely read, write or "cypher". But, he had a crippled arm and couldn't really do anything else. Agnes married Solomon William--or Wm. Solomon--Bail in 1807. They had 3 children: Joe, who died of measles at age 16, William, who married Felicity Murphy, and John, who married his first cousin, Elizabeth Bail. William Solomon died in the War of 1812 in Norfolk, VA. In 1816, Agnes remarried, Bazel Young. They settled in Braxton Co., WV. She lived until 1850, he until 1884. I read that he remarried and moved to Wirt Co., WV. Agnes and Bazel had 7 children, that I know of. The most famous was Henry, who has a monument built to him at Powell's Mt., Nicholas Co. According to family, my g-grandfather, William Bail, was with his half-uncle, Henry, when he was shot down by the Union soldiers. He helped cover him with leaves until they could return to bury him. I am also related to Bazel Young. He is my 4th g-grand-uncle and my 1st cousin, 6x removed! His sister, Emilia "Millie" is my 4th g-grandmother. And a follow up posting: Subject: Young/Pierson Posted by: Susan Bail Adams Message: I wanted to add one more posting because there is some Pierson info. According to the book,"Heritage of Braxton Co., WV 1995" pgs. 178-179, Joseph Perry James Sr. (b. 1796 d. 1881) married Rebecca Jane Pierson (b. 1797 d. 1875). She was the sister of Agnes Nancy Pierson. It doesn't say they had a son, Joseph Jr. but Joseph Sr.'s brother, Samuel, had a son Joseph. It says Samuel married Miriam Pierson, another sister of Agnes'. I don't know where Agnes was buried. The book has a lot of cemeteries listed but none with Agnes or any other Young. I came up empty on U.S. GenWeb's Tombstone Project, too. The book also says Joseph Sr. had a daughter, Margaret, who married William Hall in 1845, son of Jonathan Hall. Do you think your Jonathan Hall was married before he married Margaret Young? |

Notes for David Young: In an email from Brenda Hickman dated 22 Mar 2001 she discovered that our David Young who was the brother of Henry Young went West. The David Young in Braxton County records is the first cousin of Henry Young and this David Young and is the son of John Young, brother of Bazzel Young. Hi Grace, In a way I may have found a semi-solution to our David Young and the other David Young puzzle. This information was taken from The Braxton County Democrat between the years 1883 and 1899. This particular item was in the September 3, 1897 Braxton Democrat. Henry Young was born at Keener's Ridge, Braxton County on January 20, 1827 and was killed in action while on picket duty on September 8, 1861. Son of Bazzel Young. Married Lucinda James who was born July 26, 1829. She survives. father of five children. They are Mrs. Bert Hickman, Mrs. Jasper Given, Mrs. Pierce Matheny, and son Mortimer Young. Also leaves brother A.J. Young. Another brother named David went west and is now dead. In addition to the above information this obituary describes that a tombstone is placed on Henry's grave at Powell's Mountain in Nicholas County. One other piece of information: In the 1818 Nicholas County Taxable Property list: A John Young - 1 white folk: A Bazel Young, 1 white folk; A Mathias Young, 2 white folk, 3 horses. The only info I've found on David Young's was what matches with the other David Young. I did find in the 1850 Nicholas County Census where a David Young, who was 16 and born in 1834, was living with a McCoy family which also had 7 people by the name of Boggs living there also. This copy of the census did not list relationship to head of household. Deborah Barker states on her World Connect site that: 1850 Braxton Co.,W. Va . Lists Anderson age 1. Places David and Emsey below Basil and Agnes. From Kay Nixon 9 Jun 2001 on learning that the Bail brothers went West: Did you notice the point in this Bail history about the brothers of Elizabeth that went West in Pioneer Days, wonder if David Young might have went with them? The family connection between Bail and Youngs could be a factor! Wish there was some record of where they actually went. West is such a big direction. From Clark and Deb Barker in an e-mail dated 31 Dec 2001: Certificate of Service from the Iowa State History Dept. in the State Archives states that David Young was a private in Co. D volunteers who enlisted into military service on the 4th day of Jan 1864 and was mustered out on the 19th day of Sep 1865 at Selma, AL. 5'8" tall, 145 lbs, hazel eyes. Information source given as Kathleen Moellenhoff. |

Notes for Margaret Young: E Mail from Kay Nixon on 7 Mar 2001: Hi, I'm trying to confirm that Jonathan and Margaret (Young) Hall are the parents of my great grandfather, George W. Hall. I know that the 1850 census shows that Margaret (age 25) was a head of household with three children. Nancy, William, and George Hall who was age 3 making his birth date about 1847. At that time Margaret was living near her father Bazel(Basel) Young and her three brothers, Henry, Jonathan, and David. She had another brother named Andrew. I wondered if perhaps you have ran across info on this family during your research. George W. Hall (who was married to a Mary Jane Meadows, an Elizabeth Friend, and third wife was apparently Arilla, Artilla or similiar first name and McLaughlin or McIhlvin for last name) had two sons that we know of by the third wife and one daughter. He may have had children by the first two marriages too. The boys were William G. Hall and Andrew Jackson Hall and the girl was Balfama. When Andrew Jackson (b. 24 November 1878) was only six weeks old his mother died, don't know who raised the children since George W. Hall died near Poplar Ridge about 1883 leaving the three orphans. Andrew Jackson Hall married Lavernia (Lou Verna) Jane Martin (daughter of Andrew Jackson Martin and Mary Green) on 4 July 1900 in Webster CO. Would really be happy to hear about any info you might have ran across concerning this Hall and Young family or the Martin and Green family. Thank you, Kay Nixon And in an email 9 Mar 2001 From: WilmaMcHenry3333@aol.com Date: Thu, 8 Mar 2001 14:01:51 EST To: kanix@libby.org Subject: (no subject) Hi Kay, I did some research last evening at the libraries here. At one of the libraries they had the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 Census for Braxton County. The 1860 Census for Braxton Co. list Andrew J. Young, David Young and Jonathan Young. No Margaret Hall listed, nor Henry Young, nor Bazel Young, Sarah Young. The 1870 Census list Andrew, David and Jonathan Young. No Margaret Hall, but does list George Hall under Henry Meadows because George W. Hall had married Henry's daughter, Mary Jane, on 10/20/1866 in Braxton County. It also list William J. Hall as head of household because he had married Sarah A. Long on 12/11/1867 in Braxton County. Seems like Nancy Hall had also married by 1860 to James C. Fulks on 11/18/1858. George and Jane Hall were not listed as having any children but William and Sarah were listed as having a daughter, Emma, born in February. I believe Henry Young had moved to Nicholas County by 1860. The 1880 Census for Braxton County list Andrew and several other Young families. Also George W. Hall as head of household, age 32, wife, Arrilla 23, children, Selean 6, Bafalma (female), age 4 and William G., age 3 and Andrew J. age 1. This is where I got the girls names as shown on my George W. Hall sheet. The marriage license book where I found this information on for George W. Hall spelled wife's name as Arthillia McIhlvin (maiden name). No Margaret listed. William J. Hall is listed as head of household, age 36, wife, Sarah A., age 33, no children listed, but a niece by name of Sarah J. Huse, age 14 and a boy by name of Camden Cutlip, age 12, were living with them in 1880. Maybe Emma died, Do not know if Huse is related on William's side or Sarah's side. The 1880 Census for Wirt County list Bazel and Sarah Young as living in the household of James and Manurva Bell but does not give relation of Youngs and Bells. No Margaret Hall listed for Wirt County. Maybe Margaret Hall died before 1860.??? I also checked the Marriage Record Book for Braxton County to see if Margaret Hall might have remarried after death of Jonathan. Found 1 Margaret Hall getting married but it stated she was a daughter of Alexander Hall. Also I found in the 1880 Nicholas County Census, an Andrew J. Martin age 18, listed under David Martin, age 60, with wife, age 54 and other children. Wonder if this could be our Andrew Jackson Martin who married Mary Green. The age is about right for him. I looked at the articles in WV Heritage Books on Youngs. In the Braxton County History Book by Sutton on Page 91 there is an articles on Powell's Mountain, a little of it continues onto Page 92. Maybe this is the article you saw, but it does not mention a ghost, but there could be a ghost connected with the mountain. I also found an article on Sarah Jane Young, daughter of Henry Young, in the Braxton County Heritage Book that I have. It mentions the incident on Powell's mountain. It will copy it for you and send it you. |

Notes for Jonathan Hall: From Kay Nixon 2 May 2001 by way of Wilma: I found the deed from Jonathan Hall and Margaret Hall. It was dated January 13, 1848. Sold the property, 170 Acres on Waters of Elk River in Braxton County, West Virginia, to Joseph James Jr. At least we know Jonathan died after January 13, 1848 but before the 1850 Census was taken. Note from Braxton County history book says that William Strange James, son of Joseph Perry James Sr. nd Rebecca Jane Pierson James had a daughter Margaret James who married William Strange Hall son of Jonathan Hall. From Kay Nixon 28 Mar 2002: Sent to her by Cara Miller - Mar 28, 2002 Braxton Co. Tax Records: Jonathan Hall or Margaret No Jonathan or Margaret Hall listed between 1836 and 1839. Jonathan is listed paying taxes for 1 male in household > 16yrs 1840-1849. He is not listed in the tax record in 1849 and 1850. From Kay Nixon 26 Nov 2002: Finding out more about Arrilla Hall. The wife of this pair is descended from Arrilla McLaughlin Hall's Uncle George C. Hall and the husband of the pair is descended from another of her Uncles, Rueben Hall. George C. Hall, Rueben Hall and Arrilla's mother Mary Jane Hall were all children of Elijah Hall and Nancy Connoly Hall. |
