The following information is gleaned from information gathered by Addie Caster Ludwig, great granddaughter of Dr. Paul Caster. It is given here to provide clues to future researchers for further research and documentation of this most interesting member of the Custer/Caster family.
     
      Paul manufactured wheels and hubs for wagons and furniture.
      Paul had a tree fall on him injuring his back and chest in the spring of 1854.
      Paul and his wife moved by wagon from Hagerstown, Indiana to Union Mills, Iowa and settled in Franklin Mills, Iowa. Paul's brothers, Jacob, Joseph, and Matthew had previously settled there.
      After his second marriage in 1864 Paul, moved from Iowa to Eagleville, Harris County, Missouri where he bought a mill and then traded it for a farm.
      After 1865 Paul changed the spelling of his name from Custer to Caster to match the spelling of his brother John Thomas Caster after John changed his spelling to Caster because it was spelled as Caster in his land grant.
      In 1867, he moved back to Leon, Iowa.
      In October 1867, Paul began his practice as a magnetic healer and was known as Dr. Paul Caster. He traveled from place to place healing the sick and afflicted. He was very successful. In 1868 he moved his family to Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa where he built his hospital and home. His brother, John Thomas Caster came to Ottumwa from his farm near Montezuma, Iowa to help.
      John Thomas Caster wrote all the letters and recorded in the books the patients names and addresses from every state in the United States and some from foreign countries.
      Dr. Caster was on the first board of directors of the Methodist Church. He donated the first five hundred dollars to the building fund. He was also a member of the Independent Order of Oddfellows.
      There is a picture of Dr. Caster on the home page of this Family Tree Maker site. He is surrounded by some of the crutches, canes, and braces left by his patients.
      His son by his first wife, Jacob Sylvester Caster (born Custer), carried on his father's work. He moved seven wagon drays of crutches, canes, and braces to Burlington, Iowa where he set up his practice. Jacob also served two terms as mayor of Burlington.
      According to "History of Wapello County" by Evans pages 236-238 Dr. Andrew T. Still was among Dr. Paul Caster's patients. Dr. Still studied under Dr. Caster and went to Kirksville, Missouri where he founded the Still College of Osteopathy.
      In "Chiropractic-State of the Art 1991-1992" from the American Chiropractic Association concerning the discovery of chiropractic there is an account stating that Dr. D. D. Palmer, the founder of chiropractic, became a student of Dr. Paul Caster, an internationally known practioner of magnetic healing.
      Vern Gielow's book "Old Dad Chiro" also tells about the life of D. D. Palmer who founded the Palmer College in Davenport, Iowa.

If you pick up the line with Dr. Paul Custer and his wife Nancy Hatfield, their daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Caster was my g grandmother and was married to George W. Rutter, my g grandfather.
It is interesting that you traveled to Pottstown to research where Peter Custer was baptized. I went there to research Thomas Rutter, the iron master and his family. The Custers and the Rutters were active in Germantown. I understand Thomas Rutter was the second mayor of Germantown. The Rutters and the Potts intermarried often.
My direct line from my father is back to Richard Rutter of Cecil Co., MD b. 1746.

GEORGE W. CUSTER
George Washington Custer, ate 81, prominent community farmer formany years of Grafton, W. Va., died of a heart attack in Baltimore Monday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ray Cole.
Mr. Custer left Grafton three years ago to reside with his daughter in Baltimore. He was a member of the Andrews Methodist church in Grafton. A native of Hoyes, this county, he was born on September 13, 1868, a son of Emanuel and Rebecca Friend Custer, Laura Bishoff Custer, preceded him in death.
The body arrived in Grafton from Baltimore Tuesday morning and services were conducted on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Barlett funeral home with Rev. Arnold officiating. Burial
was in Bluemont cemetery.
Children surviving are Mrs. Ray Cole, Baltimore, Mrs. George Norris, Grafton' Playford Custer, Fairmont; and Hebert Custer, Newark, Del. Other survivors include three brothers, H. H. Custer, Grafton, Roy M. Custer, Baltimore; W. A. Custer, Hoyes; and two sisters,Mrs. Margaret Casteel, now residing in Fairmont; and Mrs. W. S.Friend, of Oakland.
