Will of Robert Storey of Chesterton, Cambridgeshire, England

In the name of God Amen, the Twoe and Twentith day of March in the seaventh yeare of the Raigne of our soveraigne Lord Charles by the grace of God of England Scotland ffrance and Ireland Kinge Defender of the ffaithe &c Annoqu Dm 1631 I Robte: Storey of Chesterton in the County of Cambridge yeoman being in good health and of pfect memory thanks be given to God therefore Doe make and ordayne this my last will and Testamt in manner and forme followinge that is to saie ffirst I bequeath my soule into the handes of God my maker hopeinge through the meritts of his only begotten sonne Jesus Christ my alone Saviour to have free remission for all my sinnes and my body to be interred in the earth from whence it came there to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors whome I doe nominate and appointe to be Elizabeth my lovinge wife and Phillippe Storey my sonne And I doe nominate and appoint Edmond Jackson my sonne in lawe William Harvey my sonne in lawe and North Harison of Cambr to be supvisors of this my Will to see it well and orderly pformed in all points as much as in them lyeth and I do give to evry of them for their paines therein forty shillings to make evry of them a Ringe

Itm I give unto my sonne Phillippe Storey and to his heires for evr all that my Messuage or Tenemt wherein I now dwell in Chesterton aforesaid wth all manner of houses outhouses orchards, gardens easemts profitts, comodities and apprtennces to the said Messuage belonginge and appteyninge together with all manner of Wainscotts, portalls, selles, seelinges, dores, windowes, tables, glasse, easements, locks and keyes wch shall be in and about the said Messuage at the tyme of my death Neverthelesse my will is that my lovinge Wife shall have and enioy the use of the three plors beinge on the right hand of the entrie towards the gate house of my dwelling house with the use of the yarde, gardens, orchards and pumpe belongeinge to the said Messuage wth free ingresse, egresse, and regresse in to and from the same duringe her widowhood

Itm My Will is and I give unto my said sonne Phillippe my Clockes six bedstedds, six feather bedds with bolsters, pillowes, sheets, blancks Coverletts, pillowbers and all other furniture to them belonginge and the lyke in every respect I give to my wife to be devided betweene them as followeth my wife to have the first choyce of every bedsteed, featherbed, boulster, pillows, paiers of sheets, blanketts, Coverlitts, pillowbeers, and other furniture, and the said Phillippe to have the next Choyce of every thinge aforesaid and then my Wife to have the third choyce and my sonne the fourth and soe by turnes of Choyce untill either of them have chosen six of every of the foresaid pcells of my furniture of houshold

Itm I give unto my sonne Phillippe and his heires fore ever all and singular for my lands Tenements and hereditaments with their and every of their appurtennces both free hold and coppihold within the towne feilds meadowes and bounds of Chesterton aforesaid

Itm I give unto my said sonne Phillippe my Lease of my Close called Seamers Close in Chesterton aforesaid and all other my Leases whatsoever with all my rights title and interest of and in the same Provided that if my sonne Phillipp shall fortune to depart this life without issue then my Will is and I doe give and bequeath to my sonne Robte Storey and his heires for ever all my said Messuages lands Tenements and hereditaments both free and Coppie with the appurtennces and all my said Leases herein formerly given to my said sonne Phillippe

Item I give unto my sonne Thomas Storye the some of One hundreth pounds to be paid within one yeare nexte after my decease

Itm I give unto my sonne Robte Storey the some of One hundrth pounds to be paid within one yeare nexte after my decease

Itm I give unto my sonne John Storey the some of One hundreth pounds to be paid within one yeare nexte after my decease

Itm I give unto my daughter Mary Izakson the some of One hundreth Marks to be paid within one yeare next after my decease

Itm I give unto my daughter Elizabeth Harvey One hundreth Marks to be paid within one yeare next after my decease Soe as her husband doe at his Coste and charges within sixe months next after my decease make such good and sufficient assurance in lawe of and in Lands Tenements and hereditaments which he shalbe then lawfully and absolutely seised in his demesne as of fee of the cleere yearly value of Twentie pounds unto my said Wife and my sonne Phillippe and their heires to and for the use of my said daughter Harvey for and duringe his naturall life as by the learned councell of my said Executors shalbe reasonably devised advised and required which if my said sonne in lawe shall not pforme accordingly then this my gifte and legacy hereby given to my said daughter shall cease and be voyde

Itm my will is that if my Wife shall fortune to Marry againe then my Will is that before her mariage be solemnized she shall become bound to every of my said Children then lyving whose legacyes shall then be unpaid in severall Recognizances to be acknowledged before Mr of his Mats High Courte of Chancerie or by obligacon in such some or somes of money and with such sureties as shall seeme good to my Supervisors or the greater number of them for payment of such legacyes unto my said Children as shalbe then unpaid accordinge to the true intent and meaning of this my Will And in case my wife doe marry before she shall give such security then my Will is that all such legacies as are hereby given unto my said Children shalbe then presently paid

Itm I give unto my grandchild Robte Storey sonne of Anthony Story my late sonne deceased the some of One hundreth pounds to be paid at his age of xxjty yeares

Itm I give unto my grandchild Anthony Storey sonne of the said Anthony Story my late sonne deceased the some of One hundreth pounds to be paid at his age of one and twenty yeares

Itm I give unto every of the residue of my grandchildren Tenn pounds to be paid respectively at their severall ages of xxjty yeares or at their dayes of marige whichsoever shall first happen

Itm I give unto my brother Walter Story Twenty pounds and to my brother Richard Story Tenn pounds

Itm I give to Blanch Story daughter of the said Richard Story and to Hugh Story sonne of the said Richard to either of them tenn pounds the said xli given to the said Hugh to be paid at his age of xxjty yeares

Itm I give to my kinswoman Anne Story Tenn pounds to be paid within one yeare nexte after my decease

Itm I give to Michaell Story the sonne of my brother William Story the some of forty pounds

Itm I give to Edward Warrens wife of Chesterton the some of ffive Markes

Itm I give amongst my servants who shall dwell with me at the tyme of my death the some of Three pounds equally to be devided amonst them

Itm I give to Xpofer Cherrington Tenn pounds

Itm I give unto John Straite and Elizabeth Straite Children of Zephania Lowe to either of them fyve Markes

Itm I give to James Story sonne of my brother Walter Story fforty shillings to make him a Ringe

Itm I give to every of the residue of the Children of the said Walter Story Tenn pounds to be paid within one yeare next after my decease

Itm I give to George Peacocke my Tenant ffourty shillings to buy him a Ringe

Itm I give to the poore of the Towne of Chesterton ffyve pounds to be distributed amongst them on the day of mye funerall Also I give yerely to the poore of Chesteron twentie shillings soe longe as any of my name shall be dwelling in Chesterton Provided and my Will is that if any ? Shall hereafter happen concerning any matter conteined in this my Will that soe often as it shall see happen it shalbe determined by my said Supervisors or the more pte of them without any suite in lawe all the residue of my goods and chattells unbequeathed I give and bequeath unto my Executors abovenamed, And soe I beseech God to have mercie upon me unto whome I Comend my spirits Amen

In witness whereof I have sette my hand and seale beinge Conteined in foure sheets of paper in the presence of us whose names are subscribed.
