This Indenture made the twenty seventh of July in the year of our Lord Eighteen hundred Twenty Between William Patterson and Sarah his wife, William Steele and Elizabeth Grimes Legatees of Saml Steele late of the County of Rockbridge dec. of the one part all of the County of Rockbridge and State of Virginia and Henry Jones of the County of Washington and State aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth that the said William Patterson and Sarah his wife, William Steele and Elizabeth Grimes for and in consideration of the sum of five hundred dollars to them in hand paid by the aforesaid Henry Jones the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have granted bargained and sold and be these presents doth grant bargain and sell unto the said Henry Jones one hundred twenty acres of land it being the undivided shares of the above named Legatees to a certain tract of land in the county of Washington and State of Virginia lying on both sides of the middle fork of Holstein river containing by survey three hundred and sixty acres and bounded as follows Viz Beginning at a white oak on the south side of the river in a line of Saml Edmistons survey and with his line North Thirteen degrees West one hundred and forty six poles crossing the river to a white oak and Black oak on the top of a ridge a corner to John Scotts land by Saml Edmiston's corner thence South 58½ Deg. West 128 poles to two white oaks on Joseph Snodgrass' line South 51 deg. West 13 poles to a white oak S64W44 poles to a white oak Hiccory and black walnut S87 W23 poles to a hiccory dogwood and dying Locust South 55½ West 47 poles to two white oaks South 20 deg. West 18 poles to three white oaks South 40 deg. East 30 poles to a white oak South 4 deg. East 98 poles to a black oak and poplar on the bank of the river thence up the several courses of the river South 88 East 76 poles South 56 East 100 poles South 48 East 28 poles South 67 deg. East 32 poles East 24 poles North 67 deg. East 28 poles North 42 deg. East 22 poles North 25 deg. West 22 poles North 46 deg. West 42 poles to a white walnut on the bank of the river thence North 140 poles crossing the river to the Beginning. To have and to hold the above mentioned undivided shares of one hundred twenty acres part of the above described tract of land to him the said Henry Jones his heirs and assigns forever together with all and singular the appurtenances thereto in any wise belonging and the said William Patterson and Sarah his wife, William Steele and Elizabeth Grimes for themselves their heirs executors or administrators the title to the said undivided shares of said tract of land will forever warrant and defend against the claim or claims of all and every person or persons whatsoever. In Witness whereof the said William Patterson and Sarah his wife William Steele and Elizabeth Grimes have hereunto set their hands and affixed their seals the day and year first written in this Indenture.

Rockbridge County to wit:
We Alescander Culton and Saml Patterson justices of the peace in the County aforesaid in the State of Virginia do hereby certify that William Patterson, William Steele and Elizabeth Grimes parties to a certain deed bearing date on the 27th day of July 1820 and hereto annexed personally appeared before us in our County aforesaid and acknowledged the same to be their Act and deed and desired us to certify the said acknowledgment to the Clerk of the County Court of Washington in the aforesaid State of Virginia in order that the said deed may be recorded. Given under our hands and seals this 27th day of July 1820.

Rockbridge County to wit:
We Alescander Culton and Samuel Patterson justices of the peace in the
county aforesaid in the State of Virginia do hereby certify that Sarah Patterson
wife of William Patterson parties to a certain deed for the conveyance of
real estate to Henry Jones bearing date the twenty seventh day of July in
the year of our Lord eighteen hundred twenty Thereto annexed personally appeared
before us in our County aforesaid and being examined by us privately and
apart from her husband and having the deed aforesaid fully explained to her,
she the said Sarah Patterson acknowledged the same to be her Act and deed
and declared that she had willingly signed sealed and delivered the same
and that she wished not to retract it. Given under our hands and seals this

The foregoing Indenture of bargain and sale was delivered to the Clerk of Washington on this 15th day of August 1820 and admitted to record. Teste Jacob Lynch
