Notes for Columbus* Decatur Jones:
Spelling of Columbuss' name per family bible and original signature of Columbuss on civil war pension documents. Bible was presented to Columbuss and Kate by son Layfayette L. Jones and believe it is in the Jones Memorial Bldg. at Mt. Vernon, Lawrence, MO.

According to family stories, Columbuss escaped the band of bushwackers (September 1864) that burned his family's home in Avilla, Jasper, MO by hiding in a field near the house and a sabre came within 12" of him (per Ray Jones). That night he made his way to Spring Creek, where he heard voices and found friends. After daybreak, some of this group made their way to a home guard company where they enlisted (Union Army). The company was informally disbanded the following June. Part of the company records were subsequently lost so service record only reflects 3 months served. (This same group of bushwackers had raided in Lawrence Co. MO the home of Dr. D. D. Beck, killing him and his son Lindsey). Columbuss is also said to have worked as a scout for Sam Houston in Union Army when 16. This is not verified.

Columbuss is said to have hired on to drive cattle from Texas to Abilene, KS. for brothers Harris, Jay and Richard Forsythe of Lawrence Co. Drove the Chisholm trail. He spent the winter in Ft. Worth and the round up and drive took all summer then he returned to MO. This could be the time period when he 'mashed' his left hand as that was done in 1868. The following March he went to Carson City, NV and about mid-summer was stricken with pneumonia, but according to Ray Jones, it was his brother Frank who became ill with Rocky Mtn. Spotted Fever and immediately returned home to MO.

Columbuss was hired by uncle Houston J. Beck to log a Spring River wooded tract of walnut and oak. Four mules were required to load. Six mules were used to log. It was during this time period that Columbuss met Sarah Katherine Payne and they married. They began their marriage on a 120-acre plot of praire grass on Spring River. Home was a one-room 16 x 16 log cabin. It had a fireplace at the west end. Doors were at the east and south. At the south was one small window. In 1883 Columbuss was working as a carpenter and fell from a roof, breaking his right arm.

Columbuss ran for office of Probate Judge in elections of 1886, Lawrence Co. MO. Received 1,860 votes (Cox History of MO, pg 56 Lawrence Co.)

Per Don Van Fleet in 1992 interview, family and friends of the Jones' were the Becks and the Hills.
