Generations of the Rev. Byrd Travis Family

Updated January 28, 2005

Rev.Byrd (dob 1836) & Elizabeth Travis (dob 1839)were SLAVES. They were the proud parents of SARENE (dob 1854)Hyde, JAMES (dob 1858) LANE (dob 1858), WILLIS (dob 1859) HARRY (dob 1866), DINAH (dob 1868), HORACE (dob 1869) GEORGE (dob 1869), JANE (dob 1872), LAFAYETTE (dob 1875), ROSABELLE (dob 1879), HENRY (dob 1874),CELIA & PHYLLIS. From these sons and daughters came approximately 48 grandchildren for Byrd & Elizabeth. The family had its origin in a small community called "Sheeplo" in Hattiesburg, MS. Upon the abolishment of slavery, the families began to grow and relocated to nearby communities seeking a better life. As they began to spread to Indians Springs (H'Burg, Ms) Poplarville, Ms and other towns in MS, they became landowners through homesteading. Due to their excellent skills in farming, they migrated to other towns and states in search of better land and an improved quality of life. Today, we are represented in over 25 USA states and we are still growing. Our family motto is "A Family That Prays Together - Stays Together" Our family theme is "The Blessed God Fearing Generation: Job 42:16. We praise God for Rev. Byrd & Elizabeth Travis for establishing a tradition of Christian living in their decendants and dedicate this scripture to our families: "And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God" Genesis 17:8. Because they were slaves, their first appearance on the census was in 1870 which I believe is the first census that included people born into slavery. This is a difficult, long and tedious process. If you have any information that can help me on this journey, please let me know. Given the nature of the times and their circumstances, I am sure that Bryd had siblings (probably many) since the wealth of an owner was calculated by the number of slaves that he owned. Haven't had any luck getting information on Elizabeth. If anyone can remember anything that might have been said in the past about our ancestors, please share it with the rest of us. I am still uncertain about the birthplace of Byrd & Elizabeth. Right now I am searching between Virginia and South Carolina. Different variables of the times makes those two a possibility,

The descendants of Rev. Byrd & Elizabeth Travis will be celebrating their 2005 Travis family reunion on July 22-24, in Crestview, Fla. Information and details will be published as it becomes available.
