* John Henderson Hilton of Hiltons, Va.*

Updated June 28, 2005

This is an effort to document the John Henderson Hilton (1868 - 1953) Family who settled in Hiltons, Virginia. John was the son of James Milton, the son of John, the son of Samuel, the son of John, the son of Andrew Hilton. Andrew came from St. Mary's County in Maryland to Scott County, Virginia via Randolph Co., North Carolina. Andrew died about 1746.

There are many documents and family stories which can be found in "Hiltons of Scott County, Virginia" by James L. Hilton, E. Frank Hilton, and Lelia Hilton Neal. This was printed in 1967 and features a map of the Poor Valley region along the North Fork Holston River where the family settled.

"Our Hilton Family: The Ancestors and Descendants of John Henderson and Nancy Ford Hilton" was created after one of our Hilton Family reunions. It features lots of extended families: the Killgores, Culbertsons, Quillens, Addingtons, Prices, Fords and Hicks just to mention a few. It has also documented the Battle Hymn of the Fords, a beautiful prayer of Uncle Alton's (A.P. Hilton), copies of John and Nancy's birth certificates, and family photographs.

On the occasion of the 2005 John Henderson Hilton Family Reunion, I have set out to gather together as much information and take what we knew a bit farther in both directions. This will correct some dates and spellings as well as update some births, deaths, marriages and divorces.

Each year, the family reunion is held in June at the Maple Grove Church which John H. and Nancy helped to found. John and Nancy are burried in the little cementary behind the church. John H. was my great-grandfather. That makes the children of my generation the ninth generation. And we know we have the tenth generation locked in as we have had some new additions since the 2004 reunion.

I have gathered documents verifying the family's participation in both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. The Hilton descendants were on the first ship to arrive after the Mayflower, fought in many wars, traveled to and found wealth during the gold rush in California.
