STELL CLAN HOLDS REUNION TO HONOR HEAD OF FAMILY 87 YEAR OLD FARMER - GREETS RELATIVES AND FRIENDS

Thursday, December 16, was an eventful day at the old Stell homestsead in Dallas County, when relatives and friends from far and near assembled to do honor to father, grandfather and friend - D. A. Stell.
After a bounteous dinner was served picnic style, the guests assembled in the living room for prayer and a brief address by the pastor. Then the entire group adjourned to the yard where pictures were taken of the crowd and also of the family. Here everyone enjoyed a talk by the community physician, Dr. Rhine.
D. A. Stell is the youngest of the family of nine children and is the only one living. His father, John King Stell, a native of North Carolina, and his mother Rachel (Stelle) Stell, a native of Georgia, came to Arkansas in the early part of the 19th century, settling near Conway. Shortly afterward they moved to the place where Daniel A. Stell was born, January 4, 1849 and where he now lives. His father served in the Confederate Army as home guard. Mr. Stell was about 14 years of age at the beginning of the Civil War and recalls very vividly several occurrences during the war, relating quite humorously how on one occassion, he was forced to feed the Yankee horses and mules and share his evening meal with them.
On January 9, 1868, Mr. Stell was united in marriage to Minerva Chandler, a native of Roanoke, Virginia, the wedding taking place at the home of the bride. The building was one of the finest frame structures built in dallas County, This two-story house still remains as a reminder of "Old Plantation Days."
To this union were born five girls and six boys. Those surviving are: W. D. Stell, J. A. Stell, I. A. Stell, Mrs. R. Parham of this community, Mrs. Vella Rogers of Pine Bluff, Mrs. G. A. Payne of Harlow, E. A. Stell of Ramsey and U. N. Stell of Shreveport, LA. Only fifteen of the fifty-three grandchildren and seven of the 51 great grandchildren were present at the reunion. There are five great great grandchildren, none of whom were present.
The list of names of relatives present at the reunion follows: John Stell, who for several years has remained with his father, W. D. Stell and wife, E. H. Parham and family, Mr. and Mrs. Reece H. Parham, Mrs. Knox Taylor, Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Payne of Harlow, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Jones of Hopeville, Mr. Vella Rogers and Mr. and Mrs. Howell Rogers and son of Pine Bluff. Mrs. Berle Bonds and children of Detroit, Mrs. Roy Parham of Smead, Mrs. Calvin Hammond and children and Lee Parham of Fordyce and Mr. and Mrs J. W. Robinson and son, Garland, of Bucksnort. In addition to these immediate relatives the following friends were present to share the joys of the day; Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Tower of this community, Mrs. Ed Spraggins of Fordyce, Rev. and Mrs G. W. Coyle and Dr. and Mrs. Rhine of Thornton.
To the younger generation, talking to D. A. Stell appears like reading stories from history, and even Robert L. Ripley's Believe It or Not, when he recalls experiences of these early days how he even borrowed fire from his neighbors and matches if available at all, sold for one cent each. He cherishes the memory of Yorktown trips about twice a year for supplies. It was at this house the pioneer Methodist preacher, Andrew Hunter, spent many days and nights as he traveled on horseback over his vast curcuit. It might be truthfully said that Mr. Stell has served his church efficiently and faithfully as steward for 63 consecutive years.
The home of Mr. Stell and his son John, still remains as in former years, what the poet desired when he penned these words: "Let me live in the house by the side of the road and be a friend to man."
