Find Family

My research focuses on European ancestors of Egli, Egle and Egly families who came to Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and Canada from Germany, the Alsace of France and Switzerland.
My great-great grandfather, William Egle, came to Illinois in 1874 from Reit, Germany, with his parents, Christian and Maria Rediger Egle. Christian's great-grandparents, Martin and Magdalena Kaufmann Egle, were at the Schloss Obermonsheim near Pforsheim, Germany in the late 1700s. Descendants of Martin Egle spell the surname in all three ways; Egle, Egli and Egly. Family legend indicates this Amish Mennonite family left Switzerland with the exodus of Anabaptist families in the mid to late 1600s. There are Anabaptist Egli families in the Zurich area as early as 1616.

The following surnames appear in Martin Egle's descendants in Germany: KAUFMANN, FREI, EHRISMANN, JOTTER, REDIGER, STALTER, HABEKER, REBER, TEUSCHER, and EYER.

Any information on Egli, Egle, Egly families in Europe would be welcome. I will gladly share information via e-mail on the Egli, Egly, Egle families I have found in Germany, the Alsace of France and Switzerland.
