Sergeant Wade Mathews, Central District, joined the Department July 21, 1894. At age 41 he was the father of 10 children with whom he and his wife lived at 419 South 23rd Street. For some years Sgt. Mathews was in charge of the "Black Maria", the workhouse wagon, but between trips made many important cases. One of the best to his credit was the arrest of Perry Smith and William Robinson, Negroes, after John H. Osborn, watchman in a livery stable at 2318 Market Street had been found dead with his head almost severed. The pair confessed and each was sentenced to 99 years
