I am a descendant of William Elam (ca. 1734-1809) of Charlotte Co. VA and Edgefield Co. SC through his son Martin Elam (ca. 1765-1810?), Martin son, George Barnes Elam (1788-1847), George's son George Barnes Elam Jr. (1819-1891), George Jr.'s son John H. Elam (1863-1938), and John's son Patrick Henry Elam (1903-1976). I am writing a book on the history of this branch of the Elam family and will be grateful for information that anyone may have that sheds light on any aspect of their past.Particularly useful would be any information on William Elam and his ancestors. He is believed to have had brothers: Edward Elam (ca. 1730-1810), Joel Elam (ca. 1736-1798), and Alexander Elam (d. 1789). One theory holds that they were sons of John Elam Jr,. of Chesterfield Co. VA, but that has not been documented. My book will include a discussion of some of the problems with the theory, but tentatively folllows it. John Elam Jr. was a descendant of Martin Elam of Henrico Co. VA (ca. 1635-1695), who probably was the Martin Elam, the son of Thomas and Mary Elam of Thurscoe Parish, Yorkshire, England, who was baptized there in the St. Helen's church in 1635.
